In my experience, it is always good for mentors and mentees to be aware of exactly what they want to get out of the mentoring experience. Mentoring is a great way to help mentees build confidence and learn from those more experienced than them. However, if they're not matched right and the motivation isn't there from one party then the relationship will not be successful. It is important that mentors reflect on their own journey, along with the support they received and privileges they have, and ask themselves if they are the right person for the mentee. Both need to be prepared to learn and grow through discomfort. Mentoring shouldn't be easy, it should challenge the mentee and the mentor.

2 Provide training and support

Mentoring is not a one-size-fits-all process. It requires both mentors and mentees to have the right mindset, skills, and tools to make the most of their relationship. Therefore, you should provide them with adequate training and support to help them understand their roles and responsibilities, set expectations and goals, communicate effectively, give and receive feedback, and handle challenges and conflicts. I believe, more than training, there needs to be a discussion on expectations, motivations and purpose. Every mentoring relationship will be different and you can't always legislate for different personalities clashing. Therefore it is important that expectations are made clear and if any training is provided, then it is framed more from the perspective of having difficult yet purposeful conversations.

I always encourage mentors and mentees to step outside of their comfort zones and into each others contexts. A mentee can learn a lot by understanding the mentors daily routines, the types of people they interact with, the decisions they make and so on. A mentor can do the same by understanding the context and how it might be different for the mentee compared to when the mentor was developing. Empathy and perspective taking allows both parties to really get the best out of any conversation.
