As an IA practitioner, I've witnessed firsthand the consequences of neglecting legal and ethical considerations. “Ignorance of the law is no excuse.” This adage holds true in the realm of information architecture (IA). In one instance, I worked with a healthcare company that was developing a new patient portal. The original IA design placed sensitive medical information directly on the home page, in violation of HIPAA regulations. This oversight could have resulted in serious privacy breaches and legal liabilities. Conversely, I've also encountered instances where IA practitioners have been overly cautious, adhering to standards and guidelines to the point of stifling creativity and innovation.

1. Limit the data gathering to only what's essential. Think of it as a "less is more" approach. 2. When possible, strip away personal identifiers or replace them with unique codes. 3.
