What are the best practices for maintaining fiber optic cables and connectors?

Fiber characterization is a series of tests performed on an optical fiber span to verify the fiber's integrity, installation methods, and performance for the intended transmission rate including the service to be transported. To qualify a fiber, five tests are typically carried out: 1. ORL (Optical Return Loss) 2. Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) Test 3. Power Meter and Light Source (Insertion Loss) 4. Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) 5. Chromatic Dispersion (CD) These tests are essential, especially in higher-speed transmission networks inherent these days.

When using Raman amplifiers it is mandatory to check with OTDRs and launch reel for reflectance near the amplifiers, mainly on 10 km range. This can cause a quick degradation on the fiber and at the amplifiers. APC connectors should be used on patch panels when fusion splices are not possible.

Regularly inspect for damage and contamination. Clean connectors using proper tools and procedures. Handle cables with care, provide strain relief, and protect from physical stress. Maintain ideal environmental conditions, label, document, test, and train personnel while following manufacturer guidelines for effective maintenance.

1. Need to coil your cables carefully and loosely. 2. Need to avoide kinks, twists, or knots. 3. Need to label your cables clearly. 4. Need to use protective caps, bags, or cases to prevent dust and damage to the connectors.

Always put a dust cap after cleaning the connectors before storing or disconnecting from devices. This way dust will not contaminate the connector.

Other contributors have covered a lot of technical scopes, I will want to add the following: 1. Pay the price to build a quality network, using experienced and certified contractors. Invest in quality assurance during the build phase, it may be a little more expensive, but it can guarantee you the use of the fiber for the next 15 to 20 years. 2. Invest more in preventive maintenance and not just corrective maintenance, identify possible hotspots of possible outage, and carry out periodic preventive maintenance on connectors and joints, that way, they won't give up on you during peak traffic periods. 3. If you decide to clean after disconnecting then you need to install caps on the connectors in order to keep the connectors clean.

When I teach fiber handling classes, one of the first questions I ask is: What are dust caps for? I usually receive answers along the lines of "to keep the fiber clean". I then respond - "Dust caps are there to keep the dust on the end of the fiber. Never trust that a fiber is clean or undamaged, even if it is brand new out of the package. Always scope and clean each fiber connector, bulkhead, or optical transceiver prior to terminating."

Maintenance is a proactive measure than a reactive one. The latter, while costly, could entail service disruption. One will never go wrong in having regular ocular inspections to check & evaluate the physical condition of the FOC particularly on the OSP side. Tidiness, cleanliness, correct terminations and taggings, secured pigtails and patchcords will go a long way while saving a lot of denatured alcohol too. Micro bending losses is a major problem in confined space and areas always protect your fiber in a conduit to avoid pressure point and damage.

Make sure you maintaine your equipment, service splicer and record dates when rotating cleaver. Keeping clean and free from dust. Do not put any stress on fiber cable when you run cables. Handle pigtails with extra care. Make sure dust capes are maintained on connectors, and to avoid surface scratches. House keeping should be on top of list and avoid to many bends in Fiber run.

Quite often, pre-fab fiber jumpers will get damaged in transit to a job. As others have mentioned, many of these fiber jumpers are fragile. They shouldn’t be tossed in the back of a crew truck. A designated area or container is recommended. By taking care of the fibers before installation, significant troubleshooting hours & costs can be avoided.

Fiber optic cable should be handled with care. Bending and scratching of connector should be avoided to maintain fiber optic attenuation within limits.

Preventive maintenance cycle of optical fibre & equipment should be performed once in a quarter of year. The best way is to get OTDR traces, after deep analysis events in optical cable should remove to maintain optical fibre in good health. Protection testing of network should perform regularly.

… and don’t forget the critical bending radius of the optical fiber !!! This is the point at which light starts to leak out of the fiber. This is usually around eight times the diameter of the cable but it can vary depending on the type of fiber and the cladding.

The main detail in the FO lines between field poles (street line) is related to leaving some gain loops with little support (barely held), where the fiber can retract in the event of an event without major cuts or damage, that It is something that is never done, always the loop gain is completely clamped to a bracket, which only gives an extra one meter to "reconnect" the FO line when it is already cut or damaged.
