Certificate expiration dates are a source of TLS failures because one can never be sure whether you are being presented the date in a logical format (DD/MM/YYYY) or the US format (MM/DD/YYYY). I have seen several instances of confusion between the two leading to expired certificates. Thus, if you cannot arrange automatic certificate replacement(s), you can protect yourself from this potential failure by: - only purchasing your certificates so that they expire on or after the 13th of the expiry month - if that isn't possible, then make it 1st Jan or 2nd Feb or 3rd March etc. Doing this makes it impossible to mis-interpret the date due to date format confusion.

2 Use the latest SSL version

TLS1.3: for sites which choose to locally inspect the traffic (using a "middle box" or similar jargon) it introduces problems. (These devices rely upon the client device trusting a local organisation's CA, to ensure the "fake" certificates created for the remote sites by the middlebox are trusted). The problem is that with TLS1.3 you can no longer "step out" of the connection if it belongs to, say, a banking website. You're either IN the path for the whole duration, or NOT in the path at all. Solutions: (1) don't force TLS1.3 only yet - not all clients support it anyway (2) use client config (PAC / config.pac or equivalent) to direct traffic to two different proxies, one with a middlebox, depending whether banking site or not. Simples!

3 Configure SSL correctly

Remember to limit which CAs are allowed to issue TLS certs for your domain. If you only use XYZ Corp's TLS certs, then deny usage of ALL other Globally Recognised CAs by de-trusting them using your DNS with CAA records; for example: @my.domain.name IN CAA 0 iodef "mailto:your@emailaddress" IN CAA 0 issue "xyzcorp.com" IN CAA 0 issuewild ";" This means that, for my.domain.name: ONLY certificates issues by the xyzcorp.com CA are valid. NO CA can issue valid wildcard certificates for this domain. ANY attempts to acquire certificates which fall outwith these rules should be notified to the specified email address. Cool facilities, rarely implemented because no one talks to the DNS folk...

Never generate a new certificate using the old TLS keypair - always generate new KEYS, THEN generate your CSR from them. Why? Remember HeartBleed? It leaked your private TLS key. So a new certificate based on the same keypair was instantly as compromised as the old certificate. Oops. Replacing the TLS keypair temporally brackets and thus limits the duration for which a worst-case compromise (ie someone has got your TLS private key) can impact you.
