What are the best practices for implementing a flipped classroom model in community outreach?

The most critical functionality in developing a flipped classroom is the process of ensuring the technology meets the needs of the students and the instructors. The ability to communicate in a timely manner and address questions and concerns of the students or misinterpretation of content will impact the quality of the learning and ensure the students and instructors do not become frustrated and distracted.

Engaging in community outreach is an exceptionally endearing contribution that I employ to actively participate for the prosperous and healthful society.Thus, prior to commencing any community outreach, I use to undertake the surveys within the target demographic.This process allows me to gain an in-depth understanding of the prevailing issues in the community. The implementation of this strategic approach has greatly enhanced my efficacy in this work. I recall instance where my team and I embarked on a Kp spot.Despite encountering a minor setback due to religious disparities pertaining to gender differences, I used my experience and unique approach, and convinced all the clients. At last, the outreach initiative remained highly effective.

Yes… AND you could literally just observe. The youngest of us are the most honest! Better yet, just try to remember when you were young or struggling or excited or confused or whatever. Mindfulness of our own strengths, weaknesses, triggers, biases etc is primary. We all (self included) struggle to be silent these days. Get out of your head and observe. I have the benefit of brutally honest nieces and nephews who keep me honest. If I had an ego about it, I couldn’t learn as much as I do from them. Children know inauthenticity when they see it. Just “be” a kid no matter your age or job or event. And if that doesn’t work, laugh it off and learn. But never assume you know what’s distracting them. It’s probably not you

For community outreach, during the "non-classroom" portion, I think students may benefit from real life (video) stories of the clients that are served by local organizations, really get to know who is served in the community you are working in. The general framework of this piece is good, but AI takes away the reality of what it is to teach. When you teach something, it is not giving your audience what they want or are interested in, it is providing them what they need to be better at whst they do. Therefore, I do not need to survey them or even have focus groups since my goal is to provide helpful teaching that allows them to advance in their field of work.

The technology used in a flipped classroom should be freely available and intuitive. It should never be an impediment to the communication, and ideally should function seamlessly in any collaborative environment. Even the best technological tools, however, are no substitutes for quality and relevant content.

Finally, providing opportunities for hands-on activities, group discussions, & practicals can further enhance engagement

Select content that is meaningful and applicable to your community's goals and interests. For instance, if your community is interested in environmental conservation, provide resources and materials related to sustainable practices and local initiatives.

Provide content that is clearly understood, well researched and not confusing and relevant to the targeted participants. Be engaging and have interactive sessions as possible.

A truly incredible teacher at our local school system once told me, "the person asking the questions is doing the learning". This has been foundational in developing community outreach and education for our team. Finding opportunities to explore and engage with one another, activities that promote discussion and problem solving exercises allow our citizens to engage in an entirely different way than the traditional presentation and q&a sessions and then allow them to be a part of the solution!

Design activities that encourage active participation and collaboration among community members. For example, host group discussions, problem-solving exercises, or project-based tasks that allow participants to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

Working with others has allowed me to experience something new, through the eyes of someone else. When you work with a group, or a collaboration it helps you gather or obtain information you might not have experienced yourself, or in a different light. This is beneficial if you are open to the experience. You might not be in alignment with the subject, however you can learn from the input others give. Staying open to ideas can create a beautiful synergy that can help a creative process.

Feedback can be an essential piece of the puzzle you need to build and grow. It allows others to give input into your design and offer you a way to pour into it in other avenues/other ways. It might give you insights you had not thought of and can help foster collaboration. It can come in wanted or unwanted forms, however even if unwanted feedback arrives, take it with open arms, you never know what sparks your continued progress.

Offer guidance and assistance to community members as they engage with the content and activities. Be available to answer questions, provide clarification, and offer constructive feedback on their progress. For instance, schedule regular check-ins or office hours where participants can seek assistance and discuss their learning experiences.

As an educator, you should prioritize providing clear and consistent instructions, expectations, and resources for both pre-class and in-class activities. Regularly assessing their understanding and engagement with the materials, as well as tracking their completion of assigned tasks should be done. By staying attentive to their progress, you can identify areas where they may need additional support or guidance. Additionally, your viewpoint should emphasize the importance of timely and constructive feedback. This feedback should be tailored to each learner's needs and learning style, focusing on areas of improvement while also acknowledging their strengths.

Identify areas for improvement and make adjustments to enhance the learning experience. For example, analyze participant feedback surveys and observe participation levels to identify any challenges or areas of confusion.

Actively seek feedback from your learners and community outreach partners. Encourage them to share their opinions, suggestions, and experiences regarding the flipped classroom model. Thoroughly analyze the feedback received to identify strengths and weaknesses in your design and delivery of the flipped classroom. Use data and metrics to measure the impact and outcomes of your flipped classroom on your community outreach goals. Based on your evaluation findings, make necessary adjustments and improvements to your flipped classroom. Stay open to experimentation and innovation to address evolving needs and challenges.

One thing I have done is an assessment of the knowledge base of the audience. This is done to avoid redundancy. In addition, include questions to identify the majority interest. The assessment will promote engagement in the flipped classroom.

For us in developing communities where power fluctuations are frequent and chances of engaging fully with online learning are bedeviled with various challenges, our options are limited in engaging fully using online options. The reach and accessibility of the online tools may become the singular consideration for measuring how successful navigating the learning spaces is for these groups of learners .

One thing I’ve found helpful is to consider the accessibility of technology and digital resources for all community members, provide adequate support and training for individuals who may be unfamiliar with online learning platforms, ensure inclusivity and diversity in the educational content to cater to varied learning styles and backgrounds, prioritize ongoing community engagement and feedback mechanisms to continuously adapt and improve the program, and establish clear communication channels to address any challenges or concerns that may arise during the implementation process. These additional considerations can help optimize the effectiveness and impact of flipped classroom initiatives in community outreach.

Consider factors such as accessibility, inclusivity, and cultural relevance when designing and implementing flipped classroom activities. Be flexible and adaptable in your approach, and be willing to adjust course materials and activities based on the evolving needs and feedback of your community members.

I agree with all of these experts who have mentioned about the challenges we have and also what can be the best way. Would like add this perspective here. We are in the era of fleeting attention span. To get the members into flipped classroom approach these are some interesting ways 1. Bite sized information to consume 2. Interactive ways to consume information 3. Making it personalized adding more examples 4. Most importantly, having a gamification model in place 5. Leaderboards, daily challenge, achievements, rewards, points 6. Those accumulated points as a tangible output 7. Desired behaviour attached to rewards (ask question 10 times = x points + Curios learner badge) 8. Appreciation that can be socially shared These help a lot

I suggest (physically) going where community (i.e., students) already are. For example, maybe you work with an organization that issues resources like clothing, food, etc whose clients may desire community change (or as many have already stated, education of some kind). Combining efforts will give you credibility and access as well as provide a chance to learn about the community. This partnership will also allow for peer to peer work which I’ve always found motivates and stabilizes any community effort. Technology is great and should be used but only in conjunction with in-person communication. I’ve found it takes a while for communities to trust a new person or organization; likewise it takes a while to know how a community functions.
