1 Fire hazards in data centers

Data centers are made up of thousands of servers, switches, routers, cables, and other electrical components that generate heat and consume power. If these components are not installed, maintained, or cooled correctly, they can create fire hazards. Common sources of fire in data centers include short circuits, overloads, or arcing faults in electrical wiring or equipment; overheating or malfunctioning of servers, batteries, or power supplies; and ignition of dust, lint, or debris accumulated on or near electrical components. Additionally, human error can be a cause of fire in a data center such as accidental sparks, spills, or mishandling of equipment.

The first Fire- Hazard decision making involves making the conflicting choice between physical openings and their access policy. During fires, there is confusion and chaos with firefighters wanting to get in and Staff wanting to escape. Fortunately, data centres are not heavily populated. Many people have died as fire. Escape doors were locked. Then comes the mechanism for detecting the fire quickly and having the first aids in place but all these are ineffective, If you do not have a robust human reaction system ( First response) with effective training and frequent fire exercises. In the Navy we have fire exercise drill on a daily basis.

2 Fire prevention in data centers

To achieve this, high-quality and certified electrical materials and equipment must be used, along with proper grounding, bonding, and protection against surges, faults, and lightning strikes. Finally, best practices and procedures for data center operation and management should be followed; such as labeling, routing, securing cables with fire-resistant materials, and training staff.

3 Fire detection in data centers

Data centers must have a reliable and effective fire detection system to alert operators and the fire department in the event of a fire, despite the best prevention efforts. Smoke detectors, heat detectors, or flame detectors should be installed in strategic locations throughout the data center, such as above and below the raised floor, near the power distribution units, and in the ceiling plenum. Advanced technologies such as video image detection, air sampling detection, or linear heat detection can provide faster and more accurate fire identification and localization. It is also important to integrate the fire detection system with the data center monitoring and alarm system, as well as the fire suppression system to enable automatic activation and coordination of fire response actions.

Air flow Impact Airflow can significantly impact the effectiveness of fire detection systems. In data centers, cooling systems create strong airflows that can either help or hinder fire detection,if a detector is placed downstream of a potential fire.the air is flowing from the potential fire source to the detector), the airflow can carry smoke or heat to the detector more quickly, enhancing early detection. Conversely, if the detector is placed upstream (i.e., the air is flowing from the detector to the potential fire source), the airflow can prevent smoke or heat from reaching the detector promptly, delaying detection. excessively strong airflows can dilute smoke, making it less detectable.

In data centers, another detection system can be considered are Very Early Smoke Detection System or High Sensitivity Smoke System using laser technology. Air is sucked through the holes in plastic pipe network, and drawn back to the control panel where the detection takes place. Programmable threshold levels enable pre-alarm warnings and full alarms for optimum safety.

4 Fire suppression in data centers

It is essential to extinguish a fire quickly and safely in a data center, without causing any collateral damage to the equipment or data. This requires a careful selection and installation of the fire suppression system, which can be either water-based or gas-based. Sprinkler systems, which use water to douse the fire and cool the surrounding area, are widely used and effective but can cause water damage and electric shock. Gaseous systems, on the other hand, use inert or halogenated gases to displace the oxygen and suffocate the fire. These are preferred for data centers since they do not cause water damage, corrosion, or conductivity issues. However, they can be costly to install and maintain, and there may be environmental and health concerns as well as potential leakage or dispersion problems. Therefore, both sprinkler systems and gaseous systems should be used with caution and safety measures.

I would most certainly not use a sprinkler system in a data center due to the multiple redundant electrical systems which would continuously provide power to the equipment unless these systems were switched off by the detection system. (I have however never seen this happen in practice) Weighed against the cost of losing an entire data center a gaseous flooding system would be the system of choice.

Additionally, testing and verifying the functionality and performance of the electrical system and data center equipment to ensure safety and reliability must be done. Finally, documenting and reporting the incident, response actions, and results to relevant authorities and stakeholders is essential.
