What are the best practices for creating impactful youth volunteering opportunities?

I will focus my answer on juveniles! Working with young volunteers is very different, so focus on tasks that are appropriate and interesting for their age group, create a cool rewards system (gamification) and always remember to value their work! Clearly identifying your WHY and the WHY of your program is the first step in gaining support for your mission. The ability to share your WHY with others is important because it brings a personal connection to the cause and allows them to get to know You (the movement leader). This personal connection can make it easier for others to resonate with you and your mission/cause. When these individuals can relate and resonate with the WHY, they are more likely to support. You may see individuals that connect with your WHY, go above and beyond in recruiting others because it is now easy for them to passionately share the information in conversations and online. Mobilizing passionate volunteers to spread the message leads to a greater impact.

To create impactful youth volunteering opportunities, focus on aligning activities with young volunteers' interests and skills, offering flexible schedules, and providing clear roles and responsibilities. Understand who your volunteers are and what they would like to get out of the opportunity. There should be clear benefits for volunteers that are of value to them.

Why do we assume we know what children and young people want? We (hopefully) don't assume it for adults. We must be seeking what people want, involve them in ALL decisions about them. If people are involved in their own care they are more likely to get involved in volunteering and there is nothing more productive than a young person bringing their peers into something they enjoy!

True involving Youth in decision making gives them a sense of responsibility.They become more aware about themselves and the impact they can give to the world.

By empowering youth to participate in decision-making, we give them the opportunity to develop the critical thinking skills necessary that will become useful in every stage of life and situation.

This is critical, training that is of benefit and adds to the young person's tool kit and skills is essential. It is important to ensure that volunteers are engaging for the right reasons. If what they really need is a job for secure income, they should not be expected to volunteer as a pathway to a job.

In my experience, helping young people learn the ropes and build the skills they need to do their part, and develop at a pace they can manage is vital for their success in a volunteering role and will make it much more likely that they return to the role. Helping your team build confidence means they will be able to do more and will also be willing to do more to hit your goals as well as their own.

In my experience, training and support are essential for the success of young people in volunteering roles as it builds their confidence and skills, which not only makes them more able but more willing to participate in volunteering. This will in turn increase the longevity of their time volunteering. Direction and guidance for young people to develop new skills or build on existing ones ensures they feel capable and secure, and will lead to more enthusiasm about the tasks they undertake.

Leadership involves helping others see that they are capable of being their own leaders for themselves. Invite youth to think critically about their questions and their problems, ask them how they want to grow. Get to know them and their goals to understand how you can infuse their experience with other opportunities to serve who they want to become.

In my experience young people may not join an opportunity that is largely made up of one group, as they feel their voice may be lost. To have connected with more linked programs & networks certainly boosts the reach and influence of the program. More organizations means more resources which can amplify the impact of youth volunteering.

With the uprising of epidemia, this is also going to be a major focus of our future; which is to be in networks aligned with providing future goal-oriented tasks for youth so that they can rise into developing careers. Not every young person who could be successful made it to college; some had their parents die on them, causing entire life-switches, and for employers to expect only college, all the time, is ludicrous. Building blocks in the future will probably result from organizations involvement outside of the educational sector. Something akin to trade schools through online classes, or on-site training while getting educational credentials. Employees need to be open to service; employers will need to be less stigmatizing.

By volunteering, not only youth can gain new connections with people, organizations, institutions etc. In essence, volunteering for the youth is a multifaceted journey—a blend of service, skill development, and community building that lays the foundation for a socially conscious and empowered generation.

Don’t pander to people because they are ‘youth’ (whatever that means). Don’t suggest an opportunity is ‘good for their CV’. Young people getting involved in causes usually have huge amounts of passion. My tip: give them autonomy, let them fly.

In this way they will be given the platform to further cultivate their skills and talents, with the difference that their energy will be channelled for a good cause. Therefore, young volunteers will have the motivation and tools to discover both themselves and volunteering in a way that will always keep them at the forefront in a world in need of giving.
