What are the successful strategies for IT architecture governance and evaluation?

In my experience, IT architecture formulates principles and standards but enforcement of the same suffers. This happens due to limitations of roles and responsibilities as well as a disconnect with the downstream process. Therefore, checkpoints should be built into SDLC processes to ensure implementation of IT architecture prinicples and standards. Governance bodies such as the ARB should ensure solutions are developed withing the architecture guradrails and CAB should ensure the deployed solution conforms to IT architecture. Deliverables as part of the SDLC should always include the business goal being delivered and the attached mission. That will ensure delivery of business vision and mission with IT architecture serving as a vehicle.

A good IT Architecture governance and evaluation involve many success strategies, to me, the 10 commandments are: 1. Alignment with Business Goals (focus on valuable outcomes). 2. Stakeholder Engagement. 3. Clear (Well.defined) Governance Framework. 4. Standards and Best Practices. 5. Adaptability and Flexibility. 6. Training and Awareness. 7. Regular Reviews and Audits. 8. Risk Management (Related to IT Architecture Decisions). 9. Performance Measurement. 10. Continuous Improvement. By adopting these commandments, organizations can establish effective IT architecture governance and evaluation processes complete aligned and supporting their business objectives, culture and driving successfully and practical architecture framework.

Mature organizations usually package these standards as part of a larger Center of Excellence (COE) that'll in turn allow for a wide range of uses and consumers. A COE is not always the route to pick when you're trying to build something from scratch. For example, startups may find it easier to create architecture principles and adopt them via DevSecOps guilds that allow for more free-flowing ideas.

Additionally, it is helpful to recognize the weight of past organizational decisions both with previous IT architectural choices and the required human resource choices needed to implement and maintain said choices. Governance should not be seen through the fixed lens of enforcement/adherence. Rather it is better viewed as building the guiding administrative methods that are dynamic and allowed to evolve at the pace that is needed to support emergent business challenges and the introduction of unexpected technology tools.

While governance is crucial in large enterprises, especially those in highly regulated industries… it needs to get out of the way. The best way to do that IMO is to bake governance into the solutions delivery teams use. Make it invisible to them and make the right thing to do, the easiest path. This is easy to say, and not so easy to achieve, but is critical for large enterprises to enable speed @scale. And yes, there’s a balance between innovation and this standardization… so the goal is not to bake that in everywhere, just where there is great repetition or complexity across the software delivery spectrum.

Transparency and understanding of the IT architecture's impact on business goals are crucial for buy-in and successful implementation. Once the roles are established, we must consider incorporating a training plan for IT teams and potentially relevant stakeholders to ensure everyone understands their roles, responsibilities, and the overall IT architecture governance framework.

Architecture governance often slows progress and is very expensive. Governing efforts must be commensurate to architectural risks.

For architectural governance to really succeed, it must be easier to follow the process than to circumvent it. The process should be the minimum that will deliver the required outcomes rather than a heavy bureaucratic overhead.

A cornerstone of IT architecture governance strategy is finally establishing a mechanism or governing body that can periodically evaluate standards and documentation, and create a forum of highly usable artifacts while serving the needs of multiple personas.

The metrics that matter are not IT metrics but business metrics. IT should support business objectives and every should be measurable against a business benefits, for instance: increasing revenue, decreasing costs or mitigating risks.
