As you know sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. Same here for business negotiations. To keep a healthy relationship for several years with your customer, I emphasize on respect and acceptance that sometimes ?the contract will not be signed“. One must remember that power comes from Knowledge and if you can use that to your potential then half the battle is done. In case we are stuck in a situation where we find ourselves in a position of less power, we must learn to accept and admit by putting appreciation and acknowledgement in place for them. This is a very humble move and can help you negotiate better.

Here are some ways which can work especially in a work setting : 1. Look for common goals , and zoom out - this will help in arriving at shared vision or values. 2. Show respect and appreciation , and demonstrate a strong intention to go for a win-win situation. 3. Even in a case of an unfavourable outcome, demostrate respect and avoid any kind of criticsm, as this will pave the way for building meaningful relationships at the workplace. 4. Always keep in mind that this is a discussion about a situation , and never make it personal at any point.

Posing genuinely open-ended questions, places the inquirer in a powerful position. It allows them to invite the counterparty in an exchange away from any imbalance and towards a new ground; one created by both counterparties. It's a tool that helps build trust and rapport between two possibly unequal counterparties because it shifts the power to each other's ability to 'navigate' the exchange, as opposed to other 'power' traits (financial or other) that may exist. The method applied by the inquirer will determine, to a great extent, the success of the exchange. The questions should be carefully thought and naturally posed. Genuine interest being the message that should come across.

I would say patience instead of silence. Exercise patience during the negotiation process, allowing time for discussions and avoiding impulsive decisions.

Be very clear on your MAN (Minimum Acceptable Number). If even after negotiation, it reaches nowhere close to MAN, then it may be best to decline the offer. Know your worth, and for that, RESEARCH IS THE KEY.

The person who is willing to walk away from a negotiation is actually the powerful one. So if the less powerful one is not so attached to what is being negotiated for and is willing to walk away when things are generally looking left, it is a major signal that you know your values, standards and exactly what you want. This on its own is strength.

Are you having a conversation to reach an agreement or are you going into battle, as the article suggests? Even when there's a power difference, we connect human to human. Trust comes from a willingness to listen, understand, be open, give and take, whilst communicating our needs & wants clearly and confidently.

Presentation is key In any type of negotiation, presentation is key. Depending on the target to be achieved, presentation can be used to convey cues subtly, without any word being exchanged. It can be used as a tool to 'surprise' or 'ease' the opponent, or to help establish a fertile ground for negotiation especially where there's a power imbalance.
