I find Ryan Levesque's Ask method very useful when you are researching customer pain points. Is not as narrow as focus groups (which assume you already know the target segments / personas). The easiest way to get into the Ask method is to skim the book of the same name. This beats lengthy generic market research in my opinion, as there you are prone to make a lot of errors by already having a developed view (even if you think you are open) and trying to look for "evidence" to justify what you already believe.
