What is the best innovation process model for your business?

I think it is important to remember that an end-to-end innovation process encompasses two complementary phases: front-end exploration and back-end exploitation. Exploration, like a voyage of discovery, uncovers novel ideas and validates their potential. Exploitation, akin to a strategic landing, refines and scales promising innovations into successful products or services. By seamlessly navigating these two phases, businesses can foster sustainable innovation, choosing the right exploration and exploitation process that fits your organisation, capabilities and needs as you continue to discover and iterate.

Innovation process models serve as vital blueprints for guiding the journey from ideation to execution. However, their effectiveness hinges on three key aspects: Adaptability: Rigid adherence to a model can stifle creativity. Successful innovation requires flexibility to adapt the model to the unique context and culture of the organization. Problem-Solution Fit: A clear understanding of the problem or opportunity is crucial. However, equally important is ensuring that the solution developed aligns well with market needs and customer expectations. Iterative Learning: The validation phase should not be a one-off checkpoint. Continuous feedback loops are essential for refining and evolving the innovation.

In my experience, I will input: 1. Design Thinking Encourages a deep understanding of user needs, promotes collaboration, and emphasizes rapid iteration and prototyping. 2. Agile Innovation It enables quick responses to market changes, encourages collaboration, and ensures continuous improvement through regular feedback loops. 3. Lean Startup Reduces the risk of building products that customers don't want, encourages a data-driven approach, and allows for efficient use of resources.

I see Innovation process models as the trendsetting choreographers of the business world, teaching organizations the latest dance moves to stay ahead. Innovation process/ Technology should be consumer centric or should create social Impact. Hence entire process must follow some tools/ gates /Toll etc. It must consider at least three basic stages- 1. Inspiration ...why should we innovate (Objective of the Innovation must align with Business needs ) 2. Brain storming/ Idea generation 3. POC development - feasibility as well as Business Viability

Nowadays as all businesses care a lot about their customers most of them prefer to use the design thinking model, and there are several models for design thinking example: 1- Double Diamond: Developed by the British Design Council in 2005, it features four distinct phases: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. 2- Stanford d.school Model: Created by the Stanford d.school, it emphasizes a five-stage process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Design Thinking is a great and valuable model with several steps for the early stages of innovation. It is NOT an innovation process model if we define Innovation to capture the value from new offerings (= products, services, customer-facing processes,...) It is vital for identifying customer problems. Some of these problems will be 'worth to be solved.' Lean Startup is also NOT an innovation process model. It is for the early stages up until an innovation team has learned which product is should build. Applied correctly, it is not wasteful, as the description suggests. The bigger waste would occur when the innovation builds a product that nobody wants.

Adding to these, the Agile Innovation Model is gaining popularity, particularly in software and tech industries. This model emphasizes flexibility, rapid iteration, and continuous feedback, aligning well with dynamic market environments. It allows teams to quickly respond to changes and customer needs, although it requires a high level of coordination and collaboration. Another noteworthy model is the Open Innovation Model, which advocates leveraging external and internal ideas and paths to market. This model thrives on collaboration with partners, customers, and even competitors, suitable for industries where shared ecosystems are beneficial. However, it demands careful management of intellectual property and relationships.

The question is wrong. It depends on the type of company and the type of innovation that a company wants to pursue. GREENFIELD STARTUPS that want to build a product that people love and then a business from it should start with the Lean Startup and then add some Scaling-Up on it. ESTABLISHED COMPANIES For incremental innovation (=ca. 70% of innovation budget), i.e. where customer/market and tech/capabilities are known, Stage Gate is perfectly fine. If you build adjacencies (adjacent customers/market and/or tech/capabilities) and or build something new, you need something better. There is no "1 Innovation model fits all"! Be very critical of the conceptual gaps between the "innovation model" <> the "innovation (solution)" <> your business subject matter. This distance is the reason that the "Innovation Management" trend of the past decade has begun fading. Cases where innovation has succeeded repetedly, it is because leadership, finance, supply chain, IT, etc, etc, have worked together. What IS for sure, is that you will fail if you do not: 1 Frame the goals top down by leaders 2 Pave a path (funding, time, ownership) from ideation to implementation in full integration with the business 3 Be conscious of you org DNA and choose what to "Learn, Borrow, Forget" 4 Play big, be ready to fail. Be ready to win.
