What are the best incentives or rewards to offer customers for referrals?

In my experience, referrals are the easiest potential customers. Most people are friends with others who have similar interests and lifestyles. So when I get a referral, I can generally use the marketing and sales techniques that worked on their friend.

Obtaining referrals is a deliberate marketing strategy for a reason. People tend to trust their personal network for credible information more than from any other source. Positive endorsements from like-minded people regarding a company, product or service raises our trust. That is hugely powerful. When we get a referral, they come to us ready to buy our services based solely on the referral form their network. In fact, our closing rate on referrals is 89% v 52% on non-referral leads. That is a staggering 37% difference. The key to getting referrals is delivering a great experience for all clients and then simply asking if they know of anyone who could benefit from our services. Our goal is to create 25% of revenue though referrals.

I find that monetary incentives generally work best to produce referrals, but only if it’s an incentive that isn’t given until a sale is closed. We are a capitalist society, so it’s fairly easy to get good leads when there’s a promise of money. When I was a store manager in rent to own, I would ask for referrals every time a customer came in to pay unless they were being hostile. I also asked customers on every phone call. Sometimes it was even beneficial to ask for referrals from customers who were past due and at risk of repossession. I could get them to find me a few friends who would make a purchase so that the incentive covered their rental payment. It’s important to just always be creative and not afraid to ask.

Most of my customers were low income individuals and families who were barely getting by. Often the rental payments were too much for them to cover, but it was the only way they could purchase new furniture or appliances. So monetary incentives were basically a sure bet that they would find people to refer. When I worked in normal retail management, there were many other options of things to incentivize. We would use pieces of merchandise that were low in cost so as to not hurt our bottom line. Gift cards to our own stores were also used often, and that was also a way to help retention rates.
