It′s a really great idea to train your ears to listen to different styles of music... and when you do... try to differentiate the different sounds and instruments. The sonic quality of a voice, a horn or a drum. What space is it living in. What′s the relationship between the different sounds and how do they communicate. What does it trigger in you. Then when you later come across it in theory, you′ll have an emotional relationship with the musical expression, which will help you remember.

For example when I teach piano, we always play scales to improve your physique and train your ear to major and minor scales. But I always give a handful of improv suggestions, so that the student can have more fun spending time with the instrument. It often leads to small compositions, that leads us on in the quest for learning music theory. How can you teach theory when the goal is to speak emotions? My answer is... Improvisation!
