What are the best design elements to use in your resume?

There is an anatomy of resume, which we must follow. It starts with header that includes your name and contact details ( email, contact number, LinkedIn profile URL), profile summary, followed by core competencies, work experience, previous work experience, education, certifications and training, accolades and awards & exclusive achievements. We must not use pointers in profile summary section. Pointers are meant exclusively for work experience section. Always focus on highlighting your achievements which are quantifiable. Avoid unnecessary and irrelevant details. Lastly, always use PDF format to share your resume and it ensures that your content remains intact, no matter which medium ( mobile, laptop, tabs) is being used.

A proper format is important for your resume to shine. If the anatomy goes wrong the whole purpose of the Resume is missed. It's not One Size Fits All. Consistency and simplicity are the two crucial factors in crafting an impactful resume. Make sure to use: ? Same font throughout the resume. Consider clarity and readability while choosing the right format. Stick to traditional font like Calibri or Arial ? Stick to consistent size. Keep extra large for the header of the resume, large for section heading and medium for content/ text ? Use consistent date format, eg Jan 2023-Present. Don’t be precise to exact dates. Months and years are good to go. ? Use least amount of colours to highlight the sections. ? Use bolds & underlines to grab readers’ attention. ? Don't try to go creative in a Resume until you are asked for it A designer or fashion stylist or a painter or an architect or any sort of creative bent of work you have can try a fancy resume and portfolio. In corporate & professional jobs the simpler your resume is higher the chances of it getting shortlisted BY ATS Keep the anatomy clear and fonts, color, borders, breaks & alignment as simple as possible. Don't make it a rainbow because too much creativity is a distraction.

When it comes to relevancy of your work experience in your resume. The thumb rule is to highlight the experience of up-to 10 years from now. Anything beyond 10 years is considered irrelevant, particularly in technological sectors. Anything beyond 10 years, goes under previous work experience section. Here we just need to mention the organization’s name, location, designation and tenure. If the employer wants to know more, they can always ask you for the details during the interview. Always highlight those information which are relevant as per the job description. Always serve what they are looking for, not all that you have.

Always go for traditional, text based resume format with least infographic elements. Keep it simple, clear and easy to read. We must not forget that the purpose of our resume is to share information, not to highlight our creative aspects by using graphics. Creativity can always be displayed through articulation of your thoughts and content.
