What are the benefits of using sets in Python, and when should you use them?

Sets store unique elements and therefore is an excellent way to remove duplicates, also sets are very efficient. However keep in mind that sets are unordered collections. They are also very effective to find union and intersection.

An important usecase for using sets is when you've read some data from "Relational Data Source" into your dataframe. Since SQL based concepts such as union, intersection, etc.. are closely linked with set theory, once can leverage set based operations to effectively push around data for your analysis.

Sets are excellent for storing unique elements, but they don't maintain any specific order. If preserving the order of elements is important, you should consider using an alternative data structure that supports both uniqueness and ordered storage.

A set is Python's inbuilt type that stores collection of element where every element is a unique. Uniqueness is a characteristics of Set Type. It will discard duplicate values automatically. For Example, you can use set() to unique products that company deals in. You can also typecast List or Tuple to Set type in order to extract unique elements in that collection. Elements stored in this type do not have any specific order.

Efficient Element Lookup: Sets provide O(1) time complexity for element lookup, which means checking whether an item is in a set is very fast, regardless of the size of the set. This is in contrast to lists, where the time complexity is O(n). Automatically Remove Duplicates: When you add elements to a set, any duplicates are automatically removed. This is extremely useful when you need to ensure that a collection contains only unique items without having to manually check and remove duplicates.

O(1) Average Time Complexity: Checking whether an item is in a set is extremely fast because sets in Python are implemented using hash tables. This allows for constant time complexity on average for membership tests, which is significantly faster than lists or tuples where membership testing is O(n). Union, Intersection, Difference, and Symmetric Difference: Set operations like these are optimized and very fast compared to manually performing similar operations using lists or dictionaries. These operations benefit from the hash table implementation, making them suitable for handling large datasets.

In Python, Set type offers great performance gain when compared to other types. Take an example of List containing thousands of products. In order to search an item in that list, you will iterate through the entire list.The process can be very slow in case list is very large. On average, you will check at least half of the list to find the element. This process, in contrary, is extremely fast in case of Sets. On average, the time complexity will be O(1) because sets use Hashing mechanism for element lookup. It is like having a special index that will directly take you to that element if it exists in a set. Thus, sets gives us great performance.

Due to the underlying hash table implementation, operations like membership tests (checking if an element is in a set) are faster with sets compared to other data types like lists. The time complexity of the membership test in the list is O(n), however, in sets, it is O(1).

If you want to check if a certain value is present in a (large) list, turn that list into a set first -- list search has an O(n) complexity while the time spent searching in sets goes eith O(1)

In Data Science and Data Analytics, sets enable powerful data manipulation mechanisms. There three key operations - Data Union, Intersection and difference. The union operation helps us to combine elements from two different sets whereas intersection helps us to identify common elements in both sets. For example, intersection of customers who purchased product A and those who purchased product B can reveal customers interested in both product A & B. On the other hand, Difference operation helps in extracting elements present in one set but not in another set. Take an example to identify churned customers. The difference between a set of active customers last month & this month will highlight those who stopped using the services.

In Python, sets offer us surprising amoount of flexibility for data manipulation tasks. We can use sets to perform dynamic update operations. Set type is mutable that allows addition & removal of elements. Imagine you are conducting a survey, therefore, you can use set to store unique respenses only. With Set type, we can apply mathematical set function on data. For example, imagine analyzing customer demographics like age groups. You can create sets for different age ranges (e.g. 18-24, 25-34) and then use the union operation to get the total number of customers across all age groups. We can also use Set comprehensions to create sets based on conditions. Python offers us tremendous flexibility to use its type like set in different ways.

Dynamic Size: Unlike tuples, sets in Python are mutable, which means you can dynamically add or remove items. This flexibility is crucial for applications where the collection of items needs to change over time based on runtime conditions. Ease of Modification: Sets support methods like add(), remove(), and update() that allow for easy modification of the elements within the set. This makes sets very handy for tasks where the dataset is not static and can evolve as the program executes.

Sets are memory efficient when compared to Lists/Tuple especially when dealing with large datasets. There are many reasons but I will highlight few. It keeps only Unique Elements and eliminate duplicates that reduces memory usage. Sets use hashing technique to assign unique codes to the elements. This allows fast membership checks without iterating through the entire set. This process reduces the memory overheads compared to other types. There is no indexing overhead. Lists require extra memory for indexing elements by position but sets don't maintain the order. This saves memory for larger datasets where order isn't crucial.

Optimized Storage for Unique Elements: Sets are designed to handle unique elements and are implemented as hash tables. This allows them to manage memory more efficiently when you ensure that no duplicates are stored. Compared to a list that might contain duplicates, a set can often use memory more judiciously by eliminating redundancy. Less Overhead Than Dictionaries: While both sets and dictionaries in Python are based on hash table implementations, sets typically consume less memory than dictionaries. This is because dictionaries store key-value pairs, requiring more storage space for the values, whereas sets only store keys.

Large Collections of Unique Items: When working with large data collections where uniqueness of elements is crucial, sets can be more memory-efficient than lists. This is particularly useful in applications such as natural language processing where you might need to collect a large set of unique words or tokens. Performance-Sensitive Applications: In applications where memory and performance are critical, such as real-time systems or applications running on limited-resource environments (e.g., IoT devices), using sets can help conserve memory and improve performance due to their efficient in-memory structure.

Simply put: if order is important, lists or tuples are the way to go. However, if uniqueness is your thing, then sets are for you.

Pros and Cons of using python-sets: Pros: 1. Stores unique values (avoids duplicates) 2. Set elements are stored in a sorted manner. 3. Offers fast and efficient operations while searching for a element inside a set. Provides fast lookup. Cons: 1. Set elements doesn't have indexing. Can only be accessed by pointers. 2. Takes more memory than arrays, because they store each element in a separate location. 3. Not suitable for large data.

During data manipulation, you may want to cast your data into a set to find unique elements as items in a set cannot be repeated. You should be aware that when you do so, you lose the order in your data.
