Traffic modeling can't be done without the particulars of roadway design, to include lane widths, priority signalling with other strategies, and traffic calming measures. Narrow lanes encourage safer speeds. Transit buses require 10.5' wide lanes - but lanes that wide for cars encourage speeding. Transit functions better with stops on the far side of intersections, often with sidewalk bulb-outs. Transit benefits from queue-jump lanes and signals at some intersections. Details matter when assessing vehicle throughput. At the same time, transportation project funding should be prioritized on person throughput - not vehicle throughput. Getting buses through an intersection faster adds more value than increasing overall vehicle throughput.

The question is too restrictive. Traffic modeling (should) occur after the trip generation and distribution processes. The Trip Distribution process should be less stratified: Single Occupancy Automobile, Freight, and the Multimodal Shared Ride and Sequential Ride mode to include all forms of fixed route and demand responsive Public Transportation along with walking and cycling (ped/cycle networks). After all, nobody floats to a transit stop. Transit is morphing to multi-modal & multi-provider linked trips between origins & destinations. This streamlined Trip Distribution Process will give a clearer picture of specific challenges by location to this shared ride mode, and give more precise projections of traffic demand by corridor.
