What are the benefits and challenges of using formative and summative data to inform instruction?

In my experience, educators who consistently use formative assessment to monitor student learning, provide timely feedback and monitor progress toward mastery of content and skills have students who meet learning targets more efficiently. They also have higher percentages of students who develop intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic motivation for learning over time.

This becomes too much data to analyze particularly when the students do not consistently attend and/or actively participate during the live class sessions, thereby creating the need to add supplemental office hours, small group sessions and tutoring sessions. For example, a lack of student support services that meet the needs of the specific student population(e.g commuter students, student parents, first - gen college students, etc.) can impact the classroom climate in myriad ways. Data driven decisions are helpful when there is institutional support to bring about change.
