FAST can be highly beneficial for value engineering projects, helping to clarify the scope and objectives of the project, enhancing communication and collaboration among the project team and stakeholders, stimulating creativity and innovation, reducing complexity and redundancy, and increasing efficiency and effectiveness. It does this by defining essential and desired functions of the system, using a common language and visual representation of the system, encouraging the generation of alternative solutions and scenarios for each function, eliminating unnecessary or duplicated functions and simplifying the system structure, as well as prioritizing functions that contribute to the value of the system and optimizing resources and costs.

Based on my experience, the most challenging aspect of creating a FAST diagram is defining the system's primary purpose, or the "why." This is often subjective and varies across the value chain, including users, stakeholders, manufacturers, and other key players. Despite this challenge, the system’s purpose—often referred to as the supersystem—typically aligns with the mission or vision of the decision-making organization. Examples include generating profit, promoting equality, or enhancing economic potential.

To use FAST for value engineering, you must complete a series of steps that involve defining the scope and objectives of the project and system to be analyzed, identifying the main function and its sub-functions, constructing the FAST diagram, analyzing functions and costs, evaluating functions and costs using criteria, generating and selecting alternative solutions or scenarios, and implementing and monitoring the chosen solution or scenario.
