Testing is usually done before debugging, when you want to check the quality and performance of your code.

In my opinion, I find that debugging and testing go hand in hand. Sure, you will want to test your theory to make sure your results are as expected for the project before debugging but you might also need to debug first in order to get to that point. In other words, you may find yourself (depending on the project) cyclically debugging and testing until review and release, which is absolutely fine. It’s important to note that just because the code runs and produces results, it doesn’t mean there’s not a hidden bug or design flaw, which could be the reason for an unsuccessful test.

A talented and thorough QA department is an invaluable asset when it comes to manual testing. They will go through all user flows and common user actions and find bugs automated testing might not catch (since they will use it as end users will, you know, like humans). If you do not have a QA department, your automated testing had better be rock-solid as now your end users are basically your QA/manual testers.

I can not understate the importance of running automated regression testing. In frontend development you are going to run into a scenario where a CSS class here breaking the functionality on a completely unrelated page. It’s not a question of “if” but “when”. This is why having automated test increases confidence in new releases.

An often overlooked benefit of automated testing is not just verifying correct behavior now, but continuing to verify over time that this behavior has not changed. This is especially crucial when there will be other people working on this code in the future. Sure, your app might correctly display that warning modal if the HTTPS call fails *today*, but what about two years from now, after 223 pull requests have been merged by half a dozen developers? Will it still operate correctly? Writing automated test cases is like putting those rumble strips on the sides of the roads: they provide timely warnings when something you’re doing is about to lead to bad results. The test cases guard against accidents.

If not done correctly, false positives occur when the test results indicate a failure, but there is no actual issue in the code. False negatives occur when the test results indicate a pass, but there is an issue in the code.
