Customer involvement at each stage is key to ensuring that customer’s expectations are met and exceeded,making agile ideal for the delivery of complex digital project delivery.

Despite its advantages, Agile presents challenges, particularly in environments where change is resisted or where there is a lack of clear direction. The need for constant collaboration and adaptability can be taxing on resources and may lead to scope creep without disciplined project management. Additionally, Agile's less predictable nature can make it difficult to provide concrete timelines and budgets, which can be a stumbling block for stakeholders accustomed to more traditional methods.

One of the lesser documented challenges is how to squeeze all the Agile ceremonies into a relatively short window of opportunity. These include daily stand-up/scrum, sprint review, sprint retrospective, backlog refinement and story pointing. If the Sprint is done weekly you may find the Agile ceremonies take up too big a percentage of time and you struggle to deliver and implement into Production due to required lead-times of change control and code release windows.

In my experience,projects with well defined ,fixed and known requirements are ideally managed using the waterfall approach and a huge benefit is projects are most often delivered within time hence more efficient resource management.

The rigidity of Waterfall can also be its downfall, as it leaves little room for unexpected changes or new insights that arise mid-project. Once a phase is completed, revisiting it can be costly and time-consuming. This can lead to a final product that doesn't fully meet the end-users' needs if those needs have evolved during the project timeline. Additionally, the upfront investment in detailed planning may lead to inefficiencies if the project's scope shifts.

I consider the main decision factor that determines whether you go down the Agile route or the Waterfall route is the technology you are implementing. It is far more difficult to deliver Legacy systems such as those based on IBM mainframe technology are very complex and cumbersome and everything has to go in and work including all of the integrations or it doesn’t go in. Agile is well suited for building and enhancing existing systems where it is easier to add more functionality quickly without jeopardising the services it runs.

Looking at data on the future of project management,experts predict a hybrid approach will be the endpoint. The current battle between both unique approaches will be resolved over time and there will be a better appreciation of the best aspects of both approaches,leading to this becoming a de facto standard.
