I love the thought of adaptive reuse. The preservation of historic buildings which are the fabric of the community, and putting them to a new use and purpose which fits present needs. I think we should always consider adaptive reuse where possible. We are in a 'throw away' world. No-one seems to want to fix things anymore. The production of concrete is one of the largest carbon producers. Lets try and 'fix' a few more properties.

I am all in for adaptive reuse. This is employed in my own backyard in and around my vegetable garden. Applied to buildings, houses converted to churches is fantastic even when substantial increases in floor framing become necessary to accommodate higher live loads. In turn, it’s a sad day when a church building becomes obsolete unless outgrowing the old makes accommodation necessary. I am less keen on a sanctuary becoming a residence than it becoming a museum or community room serving a neighborhood.

Most of our older neighborhoods have community, commercial hubs at intersections that were historically the center of community life. Imagine the Mom and Pop grocery, the local hardware, or going further back, the livery/stable which became the automotive repair shop. Most of these properties had living space above them These building are still there and can easily be returned to their former uses offering a powerful tool for the return of the 15 Minute City.

A more challenging but rewarding type of adaptive reuse is converting old buildings into cultural spaces, such as museums, galleries, libraries, or theaters. This can enrich the cultural and educational value of the built environment, by creating spaces for art, learning, and entertainment. It can also foster social and civic engagement, by inviting the public to participate and interact with the buildings and their contents. However, cultural reuse also involves complex and sensitive issues, such as preserving the authenticity and integrity of the buildings, as well as adapting them to the specific needs and standards of the cultural programs.

A less common but emerging type of adaptive reuse is transforming old industrial sites into new uses, such as parks, gardens, or mixed-use developments.
