What benefits can conflict resolution software offer for software project management?

IT is an industry which has many actors. At one extreme is the awesome guru who can individually do something remarkable with limited governance and control, think about the late 80's and early 90's for extraordinary achievements like google, paypal etc On the other end of the spectrum is the individual who has a need to be directed and governed. In the middle is the team player, decades long experience in this industry leads me to say I am compelled to gravitate to this middle ground as a way of getting things done, with the minimum of conflict, if we are all responsible and accountable we must work together to deliver. Let us not belittle the humans where it is most beneficial to manage conflicts through meetings, negotiations and putting facts on tables. Conflict resolution software are an aid to documenting dialogues, facts and data but resolution of conflicts happen when logical reasoning between humans brig down the differences, whether they are emotional or practical.

One can go from Point A to Point B, via multiple paths (actually, an infinite number) Software implementations for a specific task/function follow this paradigm too. When multiple code segments get integrated at the time of merge to the main release branch, there will be conflicts that need to be resolved by the owners/teams who have delivered code changes. I prefer the qualitative approach to conflict resolution, versus SW tools-based quantitative approaches. I trust the SW Engineers involved to be objective, to understand and agree to the issues causing the merge conflicts - and to arrive at a consensus decision. Teams have to be able to drop any one-upmanship on right vs wrong and be objective about doing the right thing for the project

Just don't fully rely on a tool to solve all types of conflicts. If you have, i.e., two people who are having a hot discussion that turns into a conflict, you need to stop it and bring them together. What I mean is put them physically one in from of each other and apply one of the conflict resolution frameworks in place. I like the idea of having them explain their point of view, making each other understand their point of view, what triggered them and getting an agreement out of that. The software cannot help with that. That can mask the real issue and make it even worse. Put yourself in someone else's shoes: if it is hard to talk about it, imagine how hard it is to keep it to yourself and not solve the issue. Don't miss the human touch!

Whilst the tool can provide mechanisms to capture items that could track ongoing conflicts and actions to be taken to potentially minimise or resolve conflicts, we as human species need to have that human interaction (face-to-face conversation and not messaging) with one and another to come to an understanding to have conflicts resolved quickly. Use the tool to facilitate real human conversation.
