What authoring tools are best for E-Learning software development?

When choosing an authoring tool, it is sometimes better to focus on what you DO NOT need rather than what you need. It is not just about budget constraints and other factors; it also helps you get a clearer picture of your actual requirements. For example, if you won't create software simulation training, you might find Articulate Rise necessary. In my case, I opt for Easy Generator. I create e-learning content for diverse audiences, catering to different languages using SCORM packages. Instead of translating the same course in different languages, I can do this with a simple click thanks to this tool. It is user friendly much like Rise. Also, Ai feature for generating questions, brainstorming etc. is very valuable addition.

This is a hard one to answer, because it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're looking for a quick turn-around and don't need bells and whistles, you're most likely going with something like Articulate Rise. If you want to add a little more engagement (Activities, knowledge checks, etc) you may want to dip your feet into Articulate Storyline. I find when you're getting more complex (simulations, branching, software demos, etc) Adobe Captivate was always a front runner for me. My favourite has been Lectora. It's ability to customize almost anything in the e-learning, and add variables to control almost every part of the engagement is still unmatched for me. And if you want to get wild - use multiple together!

In my experience, Moodle has been a productive tool. It is an open-source Learning Management System (LMS) that allows you to create and deliver E-Learning content. It's not an authoring tool per se, but it's widely used for course management and delivery. t is essential, when selecting an authoring tool for e-learning, to consider some factors such as the complexity and format of the content to be worked on; the skill level of the team; the breadth of the tool, especially in what it can do; the available budget and the necessary resources. Often, before deciding which tool is best, it is required to try some of them with free trials or demonstrations to see which one best meets the needs of the e-learning structure that will be developed.

I liked Luigi's suggestion of using multiple tools. We have been very successful lately using Storyline blocks in RISE; combining the 'if you can dream it you can build it' advantages of Storyline, with the speed of using RISE which gives you the scrolling website look and feel.

As I write this in 2023, the clear, "must-have" authoring tool for elearning is the Articulate 360 suite of products. Articulate has earned this top spot because it is attuned to current instructional design trends and practices. You can always count on A360 to be up-to-date with accessibility features and cross-LMS compatibility. The Rise platform alone has revolutionized rapid development, allowing organizations to design and develop training in a snap. The downside of A360 is its prohibitively high costs and developer-hostile licensing structure. Freelancers and independent consultants can rarely afford an individual license, and company-provided license seats, while also expensive, have limited functionality.

I’ve used many tools over the years and seen the rise and rise of Articulate. The Articulate suite is for me the best out there. Firstly you have Rise which is a great responsive tool for e-learning. Very easy to use and you can create a course in less than an hour. Want something more advanced ? Then it’s Articulate Storyline. I’ve used the tool for many years since version 1 and I’ve created soft skills training and also lots of systems training with it. You can also add Storyline blocks to your Rise course if you need to do something more advanced. Both are exceptional tools and the help you can receive from Articulate and the community is second to none.

I agree that your budget and skills are important. The other key thing to look out for is how much support will you get from your vendor/supplier. There are rumblings that although a great tool, Articulates response to customers isn’t great and some comments (go google them) border on arrogance (again not my opinion but it’s out there). So do look at skills and capabilities in your team along with budget and vendor/supplier support. I recently came across Prodent.io which was launched by Tesseract in India. A good budget alternative to Articulate if you want to investigate the new tools out there. The team are also very supportive as we had a great chat at learning technologies this year.

I take on "Friday training" for myself. I book an hour to read articles on the newsletters I subscribe to, 30 mins to look for webinars, and another 30 minutes to read what the Articulate and LinkedIn community says. This has allowed me to stay on-topic and know what people are discussing.

It is also important for the delivery of tools to be fairly close to the apps learners are already engaged with since that will make their adaptation to the technology even easier. If the delivery method is very different from what they are used to, they might just ignore it all together. Also, microlearning is going to be the leading way of delivery of content. Anyone who can get used to content creation for microlearning can easily connect with users. It is the most essential skill for content creators to learn and adapt to.

For me it is important that the tool which I use for a learning course informs me about the variety of software which I can be used: like podcasts. The learners learn easier with PowerPoint and Podcasts etc. The tool which I use informs me about New trends and gives a lot of support.

I will vote for tts Performace Suite from tts Gmbh. The new editon has everything you need: AI, lip-sync, ChatGPT, 3 text-to-speech engines. And is an Authoring tool and an LMS. You can create with one recording session: eLearning, Manual, and a Step-by-Step Guide. And you can use it also for learning by doing with QuickAccess and Context Recognition. You should pay more attention to this german company.

I really like using Articulate Storyline for making courses. It's like having a superpower to create interactive and engaging content. What's even better is their community support. It's like having a team of experienced mentors who help you whenever you're stuck. They share tips, tricks, and even cheer you on—just like having friendly companions on a quest. It makes learning and creating even more fun!

A360 is by far one of the best authorizing tools and I relay that to its high customization and continues update that is coping with the latest trends...but again you have to find the application that suits you,because if you are going to use beginner options then purchasing a high end product will not be an effective option.

Articulate 360 suite is easy to recommend as it has been around for awhile, and it has an option for in-depth development - Articulate 360, but requires very skilled developers as it is a complex piece of software with tons of options. On the flipside, Rise 360 is another tool in Articulate 360 which is the polar opposite of Articulate - it is a rapid development tool, requiring little-to-no previous experience, that is able to produce beautiful, responsive content with some limitations. Your choice of software really depends on your budget and how much control over your content you want to have. If you have the resources and skills available - let your learning designers shine and create a great learning experience.

Other items to consider are the LMS and ADA. Does the LMS support SCORM, xAPI, or other e-learning standards? This ensures smooth communication between the course content and the LMS, facilitating accurate tracking and reporting. More importantly, there are ADA considerations. Does the authoring tool offer features that make it easy to create content that's accessible? And if the tool doesn't inherently support these features, how will you bridge that gap? Will you need additional tools or plugins? Or manual adjustments? While many factors influence the choice of an authoring tool, ensuring compatibility with the LMS and a commitment to ADA accessibility are foundational.

Simplicity is the key to delivery. Anything to complex in an e-learning environment can definitely hamper user learning experience. The simplest message will have the highest impact for users, especially ones that are just now adapting to e-learning from conventional training programs.

When creating simple presentation, using google slides will do. But it was a surprise for me how Microsoft has innovated their Powerpoint. You can already use hover mouse to move from slide 1 to another slide and use "transition" to create an awesome movement of images from one place to another. Since this is a very widely known application, it isn't hard to download and upload in any LMS.

Let's be honest: one of the most difficult resources to manage when authoring eLearning courses is time. Consider how you can best save time, whether it's through developing templates, creating a content architecture where topics can be reused, or making content as evergreen as possible. This might involve leveraging multiple tools. For example, if I am creating an eLearning where content may change frequently, I might leverage hyperlinks cloud-based knowledge bases in my eLearning for the most volatile content. That way, I don't have to update the entire file/SCORM with every small change. There will not be a one-size-fits-all approach to using eLearning, but definitely consider your authoring trends alongside your learning trends!

Other noteworthy choices were Lectora, iSpring, and Elucidat, offering a range of features for e-learning content creation. However, the best option for you will also depend on factors such as your budget, existing skills, and the type of content you intend to create, so it's essential to thoroughly evaluate these tools to determine which aligns best with your requirements.
