What are the advantages and disadvantages of the big ball of mud software architecture style?

This is a term coined by Brian Foote and Joseph Yoder in 1997 to describe a system that is "haphazardly structured, sprawling, sloppy, duct-tape and baling wire, spaghetti code jungle".
