Phase Shift keying modulation (PSK) means the phase of the carrier is changed according to the digital data. It is widely used in broadcast video systems, aircraft, satellite systems, and others. As the other answer states, it can use eight different phase angles. Original PSK had only two angles. another PSK scheme QPSK (quadrature or four). The higher the modulation scheme the more data it can carry. However, it has a downside in that it is more prone to errors and is not well suited for environments where there is hihg noise. In wireless it is well suited for close proximity networks such as Wi-Fi, wireless LANs, Bluetooth and RFID.

2 8PSK Modulation Advantages

One of the main advantages of 8PSK modulation is that it can achieve higher data rates than other phase modulation schemes. Since 8PSK modulation can encode three bits per symbol, it can transmit more information in the same amount of time than BPSK or QPSK, which can encode only one or two bits per symbol, respectively. For example, if the symbol rate (the number of symbols transmitted per second) is 1000 symbols per second, then 8PSK modulation can achieve a data rate of 3000 bits per second, while BPSK and QPSK can achieve only 1000 and 2000 bits per second, respectively. Therefore, 8PSK modulation can improve the efficiency and performance of wireless communication systems.

However, 8PSK modulation also has some disadvantages that limit its applicability and effectiveness. One of the main disadvantages of 8PSK modulation is that it is more susceptible to noise and interference than other phase modulation schemes. Noise and interference are unwanted signals that distort the original signal and cause errors in decoding. Since 8PSK modulation uses eight phase angles that are closer together than those of BPSK or QPSK, it is more difficult to distinguish between them in the presence of noise and interference. Therefore, 8PSK modulation requires a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to maintain the same level of reliability and accuracy as BPSK or QPSK. A higher SNR means that the signal power must be higher than the noise power by a certain amount, which may increase the cost and complexity of the transmitter and receiver.

4 8PSK Modulation Applications

Despite its drawbacks, 8PSK modulation is still widely used in some wireless communication systems that require high data rates and can tolerate some errors. One of the most common applications of 8PSK modulation is in the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), which is a packet-based data service for mobile networks. GPRS uses different coding and modulation schemes to adjust the data rate and quality according to the channel conditions and user preferences. One of these schemes is CS-4, which uses 8PSK modulation to achieve the highest data rate of 21.4 kbps per time slot. However, CS-4 also has the lowest error protection and the highest sensitivity to noise and interference, so it is only used when the channel quality is very good and the user needs fast data transmission.

I would not define 21.4 kbit/s as a high data rate, especially when we are several generations beyond GPRS. Even 3G could support 7.2 Mbit/s.
