I have found a few points that are important: * Assembling a discovery team with the relevant domain expertise. * Defining clear goals and objectives. * Getting buy in from leadership and the execution team. * Setting up shared expectations. * Finding a balance between planning too much and too little. Taking into account the specifics of the project.

I believe that understanding the requirements is crucial for project success! It's about listening closely to stakeholders, asking the right questions, and documenting everything clearly. By getting a solid grasp of what's needed upfront, we can avoid costly misunderstandings later on.

I believe that adopting a diagrammatic approach to grasp requirements can be beneficial. For instance, you could create an actor diagram (UML) based on your understanding, striving to make it as descriptive as possible, and use these diagrams to communicate with the client. Furthermore, creating a mockup of the final product can be useful, especially if it includes a user interface.

Choosing the right technologies is crucial for project success! Evaluate options carefully based on needs and business goals while also considering factors such as compatibility, reliability, and support. Keep scalability and future needs in mind when deciding. Don't just follow trends—pick tools that fit your project best and teams.

Choose the right technologies should be a guiding principle especially mandatory for any Project Manager, Product Owner and Project Sponsor. Why? Because these are people often endorse technologies understand zero and they do it because some nice guy / girl from sales / customer success or any other sales role of vendor or system integrator told them they should use it. Remember sales people lie not because they are bad but because their goal is different - they try to sell you what makes best margin for them not what is right solution. Hence you need an architect to tell you the truth - often you will not like it - but real architects don’t lie.

Align technology with business goals: Consider long-term vision and goals of the organization. The chosen technologies should not only meet current needs but also be adaptable to future growth and changing requirements. Evaluate the impact of technology choices on business processes and user experience. Ensure chosen technology stack can support efficient workflows and deliver a positive user experience. Research and evaluation: Conduct thorough research on available technologies. This includes evaluating their features, functionalities, performance benchmarks, community support, and vendor stability. Consider conducting proof-of-concepts or pilot projects to assess feasibility and suitability of specific technologies in specific context.

In my experience the practical driving factor to decide which are the technologies that suit the project js the technologies that are known by the available team. Let’s say that the best technologies for a given project are X,Y,Z in this fit order from more fit to less fit. The team have no idea about X and Y, but they really master Z. Depending on the learning cost, risk tolerance and misfit of Z, it actually makes sense to use Z even if it is not the best tech for the project.

While this may sound straightforward, the reality is that when you're not working in an ideal "greenfield" scenario, you'll likely come across decisions and implementations that deviate from these patterns. In such situations, it's important not to immediately dismiss these as errors. Instead, the key is to seek to understand the reasons behind those decisions. Therefore, while following design patterns is beneficial, concentrating solely on find anti-patterns and try to correct them without sufficient context can also lead to significant mistakes.

Select relevant design principles: Numerous design principles exist, each addressing different aspects of system design. Some popular Principles: Single Responsibility Principle: Each component should have a single, well-defined responsibility. Open-Closed Principle: Systems should be open for extension but closed for modification. Liskov Substitution Principle: Subtypes should be substitutable for their base types without altering program correctness. Dependency Inversion Principle: High-level modules should not depend on low-level modules. Apply principles consistently: Once chosen, consistently apply the principles throughout the design process. Using Design Patterns is something many developers tend to ignore and given IT teams are often run by Project Managers that don’t understand difference between good and bad architecture, decisions are often left on “we always did this way” or “John thinks we do it like this and John is in company for 15 years so he is right.” This a lethal combination because especially when you design for cloud design patterns protects you from repeating mistakes others did. It’s called best practices for reason hence you can find in all platforms. Sure you can invent new ways but don’t repeat mistakes you don’t understand you are making. That’s why Design Patterns choose be your ally not an enemy.

While design patterns have to be looked at, it is also important to observe and understand the anti-patterns. As the needs change, architectures evolve and so do the patterns. It is not always necessary to follow a pattern. With the freedom of architectural mindset, one can create a pattern specific for a case. Even if it is not repeatable, that's a valid architecture. A unique pattern I observe these days is, to be able to design for specificity. System architects need to understand if they're intending to solve a problem or designing the solved problems. When this differentiation is established, I'm sure many new patterns emerge. As an example, n-tier architecture was once a pattern, later serverless, API driven to AI integrated patterns.

Avoiding pitfalls is key for system architect success! To ensure a smooth journey, we must thoroughly test and validate our design. One powerful tool is the Proof of Concept (PoC). By building a small-scale version of the system, we can identify potential issues early on. This "mini-system" allows us to test core functionalities, expose integration challenges, and validate technical feasibility. With this knowledge, we can refine the design before significant investment, saving time, resources, and headaches down the road. Remember, a little PoC now prevents a major problem later!

I agree, but I think that this section is missing a mention to the SLA (Service Level Agreement). Most of the times the systems we design are required to have a SLA. There are many SLA, and I found that most of the times there is a disconnect between business and customer service communicating the solution SLA and the implementation and monitoring of the compliance of the SLA.

Testing and validating system is crucial for a system architect's success as it helps identify and mitigate potential issues before they cause problems in production. 1. Early and Continuous Testing: Start testing early in the development lifecycle Automate repetitive tests 2. Don't forget to consider the following often-overlooked questions: - What's the cost of maintaining the system with such design? - What work the system will create for others?

I second this thought and perspective. Learning will always be there. That's the only thing one cannot take away from an architect. When there's a strong desire to learn more, one would find ways to collaborate. Mentors should be embraced regardless of their age. Someone real younger to you can also be a mentor, if he is stronger and exposed better in a few specific skills. One shouldn't feel shy to approach and seek inputs/guidance for betterment. It's an open world with equal opportunity for everyone to learn. How one learns is up to oneself to identify. I cannot comment on that, as it may be a personal preference of a being. And I respect the choices of others.

In my experience to learn and improve effectively it is of paramount importance to document the system architecture decisions. This can be done with ADR (Architecture Decision Records) or other documentation template. The goal is to keep track of the changes being explicit in the issue it is targeting (a business requirement, performance, scalability,…), the change, the impact, the rollup strategy, and the status as well as the parties involved (security team, SREs team, product team,…). This documentation is also a great communication tool to onboard junior members in the duties of system design, since each change record document is a real life problem-solution scenario to learn from.

Overcome your fear and share your design with colleagues - those familiar with the system and those unfamiliar. Hold a formal design review, where your audience gets reasonable time to review your design ahead of time and comment on it. Incorporate feedback you agree with and keep for the design review anything that you may disagree with or require further discussion. In my experience, each time I saw a design opened for feedback, the discussion helped make it better.

While the patterns help, one should also be aware of anti-patterns which could still create necessary trade-offs that are to be considered. Example: If you want to build an application ensuring high availability, the usual pattern that strikes is to have load balanced and run on instances. Another way to achieve the same could be to use serverless or managed application engines. A firm believer of instance based patterns wouldn't easily agree to serverless patterns. Considering trade-offs and deeper understanding of workflows will help in designing the system with a mix and match of varied patterns and possibilities.
