A student needs extra support beyond the standard curriculum. How will you ensure their success?

Success isn't one-size-fits-all. Tailored learning plans that incorporate a student's passions, like technology, art, or sports, can spark a deeper connection to their studies. For example, pairing math with coding projects or literature with creative writing assignments aligns their learning with their strengths, ensuring a more engaging and meaningful educational experience.

Learning is not a one sad to be at all. When we think about personalized learning we take into account the elements specified in this article. We go beyond that by adding acceleration activities for those that are academically gifted in a particular area or they may require remedial or supplemental support to bridge the learning gaps that exist. Having a genuine relationship with a student helps guide our ability to tailor their learning based upon their interest and learning style that will improve their academic outcomes. The key is not only personal connection with the student but instructional connection that fosters active engagement.

Learning require an intake session with learners. This will ensure that students with particular needs are identified and assisted from the start. This will also ensure that a student and educator relationship can be established.

Collaboration is essential to support personalized student learning resulting in academic growth. The teacher, special program teacher, intervention coordinator, school counselor, and any other staff that can contribute to ideas of supporting the student should collaborate monthly through Kid Talks. Kid Talk is a strategy that brings key team members to discuss student challenges and possible resources to minimize the presenting barriers implicated. Collaboration takes into account the whole child.

Learning is not one dimensional. Look at the students holistically and reach out to all support mechanics the student has. This will assist with the goal of learning and retention.

True success comes from a united team of educators, counselors, and parents. Think of this collaboration like a relay race; everyone is passing the baton to ensure the student reaches their goals. Regular check-ins and shared insights ensure the student receives consistent support, even beyond the classroom, fostering a holistic growth environment.

Never be afraid to offer emotional support. Sometimes this is required before learning can take place. A student will not be able to focus on school work or tasks or test if an emotional need arises. Emotional support can also be in the form of establishing networks where students and parents can be referred for assistance.

Developing social emotional skills among our youth has been a driving force for almost a decade. Students who are able to self advocate increase their ability to successfully navigate adulthood. Teaching students the power of self advocacy supports empowerment and resiliency.

Students thrive when they feel seen and supported. It’s about more than grades—acknowledging their emotional well-being builds resilience. Teaching self-advocacy helps them voice their needs confidently, which empowers them academically and in life. Emotional intelligence is as crucial as academic success in their overall development.

Ignite that fire, that desire to learn! And, whatever helps you do that is a good resource, whether it is visual or auditory, or any form of rigour. The truth is simple and beautiful. If you can explain anything in simple terms, that helps visualise and fires up the imagination of the learner, then anything that helps you do that is a good resource.

Immense discussion happens on assessments, and their purpose - assessments "of learning", assessments "for learning", comprehensive assessments, formative assessments, etc. The key is remembering that the child is the centre of the teaching-learning process. Everything else is to support the child on their path of learning. In assessments, you peep into their world, assess the mental model, and help them apply the knowledge they possess, or at times help them use that knowledge with speed and accuracy (especially if they need to appear in competitive exams).

One of my mentors always used to mention "The trait of a good leader is to make themselves obsolete by empowering their team". Here the teacher-student team, the teacher being the leader should always focus on empowering the student to be the independent learner. By inculcating the habit of asking questions, going to lengths to finding answers, developing and using their critical thinking and analytical skills, generating results, assessing them and feedback

Empowerment is key. Teaching students how to set realistic goals, manage their time, and celebrate small victories equips them with lifelong skills. These strategies don’t just help them academically; they prepare them to lead with confidence in any endeavor they choose, fostering self-motivation and resilience in overcoming challenges.

The usual school journey in India is 14 years. Consider- 1. When the parents handed over their child to you, what was their expectation? 2. Is the curriculum designed to fulfil those expectations? 3. In your opinion, what else "beyond the curriculum" is required? Do the parents agree to it? Does the system support it? What other resources would you require? How can the parents co-operate?
