If sourcing materials for factories, always keep a back up source for any emergency requirement and they can supply instantly. Here you cannot count on cost effectiveness because the production loss is more important than the materials/parts cost. Yes, you can keep almost emergency shutdown materials in back up but always there is a need during the shutdown.

Supplier evaluation is a must in any manufacturing company, material grade, delivery schedule, availability and price must be evaluated with every sourcing. Whenever the first party cannot provide/fulfil the requirements we have to choose the second option for immediate supply and thus project cost cannot be calculated during this exercise. Always remember that some penalties are to be implemented with each source so that we at least recover some loss in this process.

Long-leading materials to be sourced once the project is awarded. For this, we need to keep and build strong relationships with overseas and local sources. The tentative delivery schedule must be asked even before the purchase order is placed so that sometimes the supply duration can be reduced. I recommend financially strong companies must place the common materials even for stock. For instance, a pole manufacturing company can keep the main fast-moving raw material (hot rolled coils) in stock. Thus, minimise the cost, long lead delivery and production time.
