How would you explain Data Governance to someone unfamiliar with it?

Imagine Data Governance as a fun family dynamic, where it plays the cool but responsible parent to your data, the adventurous child. Just like a parent guides & supports their child through life's ups & downs, Data Governance ensures your data grows up right—keeping it safe from the digital boogeymen (unauthorized access), teaching it meaningful life lessons (providing valuable business context), & creating a family album of memories (tracing data from source to target). As the family evolves, so does the way they interact, ensuring amidst all the changes, the value & integrity of the data are never lost. It’s all about nurturing that data to help it reach its full potential, just like watching your child grow up to be something amazing!

I have always said that data governance is partly a study in human psychology. Let me explain :) As a governance professional, it's our job to help: 1) understand what the business objectives are and 2) how our policies, standards, procedures, roles and responsibilities, documentation (capabilities) can enhance those business goals and objectives. The human psychology part comes in that, deploying those capabilities, has a large human impact. Many times, we're "moving someone's cheese" and that can come across as somewhat disruptive. Then I give an analogy like: Compare data governance to organizing a library, where there are rules for categorizing, managing, and maintaining the books to ensure easy access and reliability.

Since we're familiar with political governance structures, let me draw some similarities to understand Data governance. However, despite their differing scopes, both fundamentally share common ground: Rule Establishment: Both data governance and political governance involve the formulation of rules, regulations, and policies Accountability and Oversight: Both governance systems require mechanisms for accountability and oversight. Decision-Making Frameworks: Both systems employ structured decision-making processes. Balancing Interests: Both governance types entail balancing diverse interests. Compliance and Regulation: Both are subject to compliance and regulation. Let me add another answer to explain it in detail.

Let's explain with something we can all relate to - crude oil.??? You've likely heard the phrase "data is the new oil.” This implies that data is a valuable resource - just like oil. It’s about ensuring data is safe and high-quality. Data governance is all about treating data like an asset and making sure everyone in the organization does the same.

To my friends who are not in the data space, when they ask me the importance of the work I do I say, "We have a phrase, 'good data in good data out but bad data in bad data out'. This means if you have clean data then your answers to your analytical questions will be correct. But if your data does not pass data quality checks then you are likely to have issues downstream". This is a very simple way to explain why data governance is important.

Data governance is paramount for any organization aspiring to be truly data-driven. Even minor data quality issues, which may not directly stem from the Data Platform itself, can significantly undermine user confidence. For example, when a company decides to implement advanced analytics and data science, or other initiatives like master data management, and soon realizes successful MDM/advanced analytic practices require the foundation of data governance in place.

Data Governance has different importance for different stakeholders. For a data scientist, data governance helps discover data, access quality data, quickly understand context and how to use data ethically. For data executives like CDO, data governance provides the standards and processes to manage data effectively. For business users, data governance helps make informed decision making and interpret data easily

I always explain data governance as running a restaurant kitchen. Every day you receive raw products that needs to be stored (Dry, Fridge, Freezer ...) and rotated for Max consumption date. Then it needs to be cooked in a certain way. Then dishes to be served to your clients based on the menu they've seen. All that orchestration is data governance. Knowing how and where to store, which ingredients based on a specific recipe, how to visually make your plate ...

I often use a water example. The need to govern our water sources. There is Raw “Data” Water that can be consumed although not suggested. There needs to be laws in place ensuring minimum safety. What can be dumped there how it’s used etc. Then there is refined water (Tap). Typically treated at a plant. It must adhere to more regulations etc. Then there is bottled water (comes with labels , added ingredients, where it’s sourced etc)(consumption) even more regulations, labels, information needed to provide to the consumer. My job is to help the develop rules to keep people safe. Inform the public of where the water is from. Inform If anything happens to the water. Help create quality checks to ensure water safety etc.

While pitching Data Governance to a novice, it's best to start with a use case which is familiar to the audience. For example, Data monetization can be explained to the Management, which will immediately grab their attention. Or how to improve Sales forcast through DG to the Sales Team. Or How to better understand customer needs to the marketing team. It should be a top down approach, where the presentation should solve a real life problem of the intended audience and thereafter trace back to the origin of DG implementation.

Imagine data as a vast library, and data governance as the librarian's meticulous system. * Each book (data) has clear categorization, * accurate details (metadata), and * rules on how it's handled (governance policies).
