What is the most important target? If I'm going to speak to a group of people with very different levels of expertise, I have to ask myself: what is the most important cluster? If I rely on the less competent ones, I will be boring to the others. If I rely on the experts, others won't be able to follow me. If I stay in the middle, I'll make everyone unhappy. I have to make a choice and declare it at the beginning. It's not a good situation, let's face it.

Begin you speech with a story that they RELATE to and can see themselves in, then leverage that to educate them about your topic. Storytelling is so incredibly important. More stories and less technical information is key in creating an atmosphere for the audience to stay engaged with you the entire speech. "Gauging the Audience" with Q&A not only allows the ability to cater to the particular group, it also allows to see who are the people who are interacting. If possible, acknowledge gratitude to one of the specific participants specifically. Humor after getting interaction will also continue to portray goodwill.

Easiest way to correct public speaking pace is to practice your speech & listen to music prior to your speech at 92BPM (Beats per Minute). This invaluable tip was given by top comedian Jimmy Carr. I also confirmed it while listening to winning speeches at Toastmasters International. Pacing will also expand or contract depending on the size of the audience having to absorb content. For example, a group of 10 people will need less time to pause for laughing. A group of 1,000 people will need more time to absorb, laugh, and come back to you.

My preferred method for summarizing key points and reinforcing takeaways is to distribute handouts and create memorable words, acronyms, or taglines. This is also an excellent opportunity to ask a couple of my audience members to share some of the most useful lessons they learned during my speech or session. This act consistently measures my audience's comprehension. I also ask pertinent questions about the impact of my presentation on their lives and how they believe the key principles will change or transform their lives. It's also a good idea to ask difficult questions, such as whether they learned something new, because the topic may not appear to be new, but the tools, techniques, or approaches may be.

My suggest is always to assume that your audience doesn't know what you are talking about. If they do know, it will be a nice refresher, perhaps from a different prospective. If they don't know, then it'll be a good learning opportunity. The last thing you want to do, is assume they know and leave your audience clueless.

There are times when building rapport with the audience fails miserably. It is part of the learning process of rapport. Admitting failure to connect actually helps to 1- acknowledge the awkwardness & 2- connect with the audience because we've all had the shared experience of failure. Having a practiced phrase is helpful for moments like this. "Well, that flew like a lead balloon! That dent of rockbottom gives character to a free keynote." From there, use the focus back to the takeaway message and known shared values. If there were further examples in your keynote, remove unnecessary details and come back to the shared values. The time will end...and try again.

Only focus and expand on the most significant issues, and avoid needless anecdotes. Only utilize experience or personal stories when necessary, and presume that everyone in the room is on a different path than you, which means what you're saying may be irrelevant or, worse, vital to them. Some may even be present because they are forced to. This may sound negative, but doing so can help you prepare for the worst-case scenario, including the most difficult ones like people asking hard-hitting questions. Finally, enjoy the process since, at the end of the day, both you and the audience will have learned something.
