My rule is that if I don’t talk to a person at least once to get to know them I unfriend them on LinkedIn. And I politely tell them this in my initial message. What’s the point of having hundreds of connections but no collaboration and value for each other?

We shouldn’t forget to treat people as human beings first and potential client or mentor later. Of course your intentions are to grow your network and the opportunities that come along with it but most importantly I follow a wise scripture from the Bible that says, “It’s better to give, then to receive.” So whenever I connect with someone I genuinely try to see what value am I offering to the person I’m networking with. Am I solving a fundamental problem for them. Are they benefitting in any way or is it just me trying to get more clients or givers? This has helped me greatly!

It's not hust about the initial meeting and building. The follow up and maintaining the relationship is important. If this is a relationship to help you grow in business then the benefits over time grow exponentially, after the beginning faze of growth.

Do something no one else would do-example-find out what their passion is and lean in. For me, I like to take photos of investors buildings and ask them if they have a plan? Or tell them that we have a plan-let’s chat.
