How would you address a situation where a colleague takes credit for your ideas in a teaching project?

This depends on the situation. For a small issue I would consider it a useful insight into the person taking credit for my work and let it go. For a medium sized issue, I would privately address the individual to calmly clear up the "miscommunication." For a really large infraction I would schedule a private meeting with the offending party and whoever was above us in the management chain.

As noted, the first thing is to remain calm about what occurred. My experience is that in mnay instances the error was unintentional. What's key is that the idea was presented in it's entirety and open for discussion. If you do feel the need to address the issue, then approach the colleague one-on one. Explain your concerns, discuss with them how you would like to resolve the issue. Key to this discussion is being able to validate your assertions with documentation.

Address the issue privately with your colleague, explaining how their actions affect you and clearly outlining your contributions. Request acknowledgment for your ideas and try to keep future ideas confidential to avoid similar situations. Aim for a constructive discussion to help them recognize and correct their behavior, fostering a respectful working environment.

It would depend on the nature of the idea. If the idea was the product of brainstorming, it may not be worth doing anything. On the other hand, if the idea was the product of serious research in my area of expertise, I would have a private conversation with my colleague in an effort to determine the intent behind the appropriation. If the use turned out to be innocent, I would simply ask that a correction or clarifying statement be made. However, if the theft appeared to be an intentional misappropriation, I would let my colleague know that I am prepared to publicly demonstrate the source of the idea, and I would suggest a statement acknowledging that a mistake was made could limit the embarrassment and avoid more serious repercussions.

I know firsthand how frustrating it can be when faced with challenging situations like this. Nevertheless, it's important to maintain focus on the ultimate goal and ask key questions: Will this idea benefit others beyond my colleague? Does it align with the organization's objectives? Ultimately, the truth will prevail.

Before diving into a dramatic showdown, consider whether it was a blatant steal or a case of 'miscommunication.' Maybe your colleague thinks the ‘copy-paste’ button is a creative tool! Understanding their intent can make all the difference.

When it comes to credit theft, I don't think staying calm or moving on helps. Keeping all things constant, I'd say be assertive and call it out in a professional way. "[Call out the scenario] I noticed that you shared the XYZ idea as yours during today's presentation. [Address the sore point] I am sure you know that I spent the last few weeks developing that module and I was worried that my contribution wasn't duly acknowledged. [Propose a solution whilst setting expectations] Moving forward, I would appreciate clear communication in attributing credits. As teachers who learn from our interdisciplinary collaboration, it's important we respect each other's intellectual property. I'm open to discussing other resolutions."

How about "avoid the person"? In this day and age, you have got to realize that when confronting a person and trying to communicate with a person can be seen as "threatening". The advice on the left side suggested "This direct approach can often lead to a mutual understanding and resolution". Sure, right. Such an approach can land you in the HR office or the Dean's office trying to explain away what it is that you said to this person. You may be better off, depending on the person, juggling three hand grenades with the pins pulled out than to address the person because approaching a person who may have a short fuse could be explosive. So my advice, be cautious and weigh the situation.

Arrange a private meeting with your colleague to discuss the issue calmly and professionally. Begin by explaining how you noticed your ideas being presented as theirs and express your feelings about the situation. Use "I" statements to avoid sounding accusatory, such as "I felt concerned when I saw my ideas being presented without acknowledgment." Emphasize the importance of collaboration and mutual respect in your working relationship. Suggest ways to prevent such misunderstandings in the future, like crediting contributions during meetings or sharing project notes with all team members. If necessary, involve a supervisor or mediator to ensure the conversation remains constructive.

Sometimes the best approach is to have a candid conversation. Think of it as a polite coffee chat rather than a courtroom drama. Open dialogue can often clear things up faster than a detective solving a mystery.

Después de leer, este punto es el que más me identifica, como para poder resolver este tipo de acciones en el futuro. Si bien, siempre en educación existe el trabajo colaborativo, siempre es bueno darle créditos la equipo completo. Documentar cada reunión de trabajo, los asistentes y las propuestas, pueden ser una excelente medida.

Keep on with the good work. Just like how bees remain the natural creators of honey and humans the collectors of honey. There are people within organisations who have the rare ability to generate insights and solutions to shared needs. Although cases of ''idea collection" or "credit theft" at workplace might seem frustrating, idea generators should understand that it will never be in their best interest to allow such to negatively affect them. Just like bees continue to make honey, regardless of who collects them. Gifted idea generators and providers of solutions in organisations will always have that ability that many lack. The best of rewards for them come from within and beyond the spheres of any organisation, regardless of circumstance.

It feels great that my ideas are being adopted by as many people as possible. The real credit is getting my ideas communicated to as many people as possible who can move forward and contribute to the betterment of humankind

Always be on time. Just want to realize ourselves that how someone steals our ideas. Please don’t share your ideas with anyone before you share with audiences or authorities. Always be aware of your ideas. And timely response your team. Don’t take it so long to be happening. If you have any ideas you want to share with others, be prepared and share them as soon as possible. Never wait for long. Time is precious and your ideas are more valuable.

Here are the lessons here and the advice by the left hand side is quite simply laughable. You are in higher ed, you know that there are people with behavioral issues. Many higher ed professors have inflated ego's that require you to acknowledge that their ego will show up ten minutes before they do. And at a meeting, you better have a extra seat for them so their ego has a place to sit. Be careful of who you share ideas with and how you share these ideas. Just be the better person and acknowledge people and their contributions. Be the better person.
