How would you address faculty pushback when introducing a new grading policy in your school?

If your target is the top of tree, focus on the mountain. We have implemented higher criteria in our campus, and there was a solid reason. Because no university grants the degree below 45% marks. So there is no need to celebrate 40% marks as passing percentage. Other major reason is to prepare for the market competition and growth. Yes, we must start where the competitors do their endings.

It's important to have open communication with the team ,providing clear rationale for the change also involve faculty in the decision-making process, offer training and support for implementation, and address concerns empathetically while emphasizing the benefits of the new policy for student success and overall academic improvement.

Wherever possible, it is preferable to involve the Team at the planning stage of any new systems. When people have been included in the process, even when the outcome is not one they favour, having had the opportunity to voice thoughts and be heard early on will help to alleviate anxieties or concerns. Not always because there is no perfect approach however, doing with people as opposed to doing to people is my way of operating.

Well, if you are getting pushback after introducing the policy, then your work started late. The time to handle "pushback" is early in the design phase. Listening to the varying perspectives, combined with creating a shared vision, allows issues to be resolved long before you get to the phase of introducing the policy.

When we implemented a new grading policy in my former school, I clearly articulated the need for the change. Faculty members teaching sections of the same course needed to adhere to a common grading standard. An A could not start at 90% in one person’s section and 93% in another’s. The faculty had multiple opportunities to discuss options. They ultimately settled on adopting a common grading standard for all our core courses. Because the faculty were involved in the full discussion, we enjoyed a high level of buy-in. One or two people still had issues with the end result. But because the faculty were equal partners with me in the endeavor, the change went quickly and smoothly.

Open communication before the overall change is crucial. We must also provide room for suggestions and concerns. When embedding the technology, ensuring every faculty member has access to the training is a must. The work-life balance of the faculty must be honored, and they must be compensated accordingly. Using the evolving AI tool ethically with proper credit is a way to save time and human resources.

Muitas vezes definimos o que desejamos treinar dentro dos trabalhos diários do professor. Uma vez identificado, se torna prazeiroso dividir com o profissional as nomenclaturas atingidas com seu trabalho e as etapas de avan?o que ele já conquista, estimulando os colegas a serem identificados. Orientados e treinados como se o novo já acontecesse dentro dele só é preciso lapidar. Inverter os treinos e fazer uso da prática.

Creo que este punto es importante, ya que las herramientas y conocimientos cambian con el avance del tiempo; sin embargo las habilidades específicas de cada disciplina y las transversales trascienden en el tiempo. Es por esto que se debe enfocar la adquisición y evaluación de habilidades más que en la presentación de un contenido.

La colaboración es esencial, ya que finalmente te logra consolidar buenas prácticas en los docentes. También permite incluir variables desde diferentes puntos de vista. Estas variables pueden ser causa de mejora en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Además, la evidencia empírica suele ser un gran impulso para poder cambiar o adquirir nuevas prácticas.

I’m a big fan of pilot programs. A great leader wants to be able to address concerns ahead of time whenever possible and a test run will help create the best version of your idea. A well built pilot provides you with data on successes and ready to go champions. Whether moving to standards based grading or mastery driven grading, as long as the student is at the forefront you’ll get faculty buy-in.

It is imperative to provide a plusaible rationale why the existing system does not fit for purpose any longer. To persuade stakeholders you ought to back up your rationale with relevant qualitative and tangible empirical data.
