How is self-directed learning changing digital learning models?

Collaborative learning is a common aspiration for self-directed learners who often actively seek out opportunities to engage with peers, subject matter experts, and mentors. Digital learning platforms integrate social elements, including discussion forums, video conferencing, and collaborative projects, to foster and support this social learning experience.

From my perspective in education, I’ve always believed that genuine learning emerges when it resonates with the individual. Self-directed learning epitomises this. It gives learners the agency to steer their own educational journey. In our digital age, the possibilities have become even more expansive. Learners aren’t confined to a single path but have a vast landscape of content tailored to their unique aspirations. They can delve into topics that spark their interest, choose modules that fit their learning style, and adjust difficulty levels to suit their pace. This personalisation, which digital learning platforms offer, isn’t just about flexibility; it’s about making learning a deeply personal and transformative experience.

One of the most important changes that has happened in recent past in Learning and Development domain is the emergence of Personalised Learning paths. This is indeed a great change that helps individuals to thoughtfully curate learning pathways designed to their needs. Three major things to keep in mind is to: 1) Understand your learning needs. 2)Choosing the learning modules carefully and 3) Implementing the learning’s in day to day basis to keep it retained. These would clearly help one to increase their productivity using these personalised learning pathways.

To grasp the essence of learning solutions, we need to stand on the bigger picture——The Golden Trinity, which usually consists of learning plans, learning experience, and learning outcome. Every way of learning take place within this map, and personalized learning is basically around where to start rather than which is better compared to other ways of learning; there are of course other startpoints for various needs and contexts, and at the end of the day (or usually much sooner), learners from different startpoints would meet each other on their way and then continue their journey till the end that leads to what they need and want. So personalized learning shall not be overrated and I believe that is the premise of this discussion.

Self-directed learning can be facilitated through scaffolded instructions, supporting elements which aid learners in developing knowledge and skills. These instructions can be imparted by; modeling desired behavior, providing explanations about concepts with illustrations, inviting learners to participate in a task in which the instructor acts more like a guide, and gradually withdrawing instructor support to pave way for learner independence.

From my experience, when students steer their own journey, their engagement and retention soar. Self-directed learning not only imparts knowledge but also fosters a profound sense of autonomy and agency. Taking charge of their learning trajectory allows learners to transition from being passive recipients to active shapers of their educational narrative. Digital platforms are catalysing this transformation, by providing vibrant collaborative spaces. Within online forums and groups, learners aren't just passive spectators; they actively shape discussions, share insights, and build upon collective knowledge. It's this reciprocity – the act of both giving and receiving – that makes modern learning truly dynamic.

21st century education such as online learning opportunities, pedagogical shifts and availability of Internet on mobile devices have put additional expectations on learners to take more initiative in their own learning. Similarly, innovations such as Khan Academy or the Flipped Classroom have put to light the value of self-directed learning in schools and have led to consequent changes in the role of the traditional classroom teacher.

Collaborative learning communities helps a learner to share his or her learning’s and perspectives to similar group of learner’s who are exploring the particular topic. Major advantages of this approach is: 1)You get different perspectives of a similar topic which opens our thought process. 2) Enables us to network and foster relationships across various domains of expertise. 3)Helps us in deep understanding of concepts and applications in different situations. 4)Lastly sharing of these learning pearls helps us to retain the knowledge for a longer time. In my experience collaborative learning communities have helped me gain a lot of insights in the topic.

In this rapidly evolving digital age, it's not just about knowing but about adapting, evolving, and lifelong learning. Self-directed learning naturally instils attributes like self-regulation, critical thinking, and digital literacy. And when integrated with digital platforms, the learning experience is supercharged. Students are exposed to real-world scenarios, be it through project-based tasks or experiential activities. They aren't just learning content; they're harnessing skills, evaluating their growth, and navigating challenges with the digital tools at their fingertips. It's this holistic approach that truly prepares learners for the complexities of our digital era.

I totally echo this view. With evolving rapid changes in Learning and influence of digital tools, self directed learning will be the future trend setter. These digital platforms helps the learner’s to simulate and practice their learning’s before the implement in their day to day life giving them one more opportunity to explore their learning’s. This indirectly helps the individual to retain the learning and convert it in to life long skills. The advent of digital tools also provides the learner an opportunity to revisit the learning curve, their progress, improvement in skill mapping thus helping one to tap the progress real-time.

This is the major benefit of self paced digital learning. Unlike the traditional method of learning’s here the individual has an opportunity to map his entire progress in the learning curve. With the help of digital datas one can clearly measure the progress, access the learning levels, map the progress through various evaluations and can even simulate learning’s in various scenarios. All of these without even putting an extra effort. Only thing to keep in mind is to have a clear idea of how to use these data points to analyse your progress.

In my experience the biggest implication really is on the learning content strategy, and the tools and systems for managing it. Instructional design paradigms and LMS's can tend to box you into creating distinct packaged -courses- that are monolithic and hierarchical in nature, authored to be consumed sequentially, even if selling access by course is not your business model. If learning paths are personalized, inherently the user needs to be able to start at any point, which necessitates thinking of the entire corpus as topic-based microlearning connected with purpose-driven metadata strategy. Then content can interchangably be assembled at will into learning paths; either AI-recommended, user-created or community-suggested paths.

With various users from different disciplines exploring the same digital domain will benefit both creators of digital learning tools and learner’s to identify more customisations which in turn will bring a heap of changes. One thing is for sure this is the future of learning and one needs to embrace this with open hands.
