How often should you evaluate your construction management performance?

One thing that any Construction Company should look into is ISO Compliance. It is a great benefit and tool to use to streamline your core task.

As a portfolio manager working in renewable energy, my company is involved in several construction projects ongoing so is key for us to monitor them properly. It allows project managers to identify strengths and weaknesses, measure progress against goals, and ensure that the project stays on track. Evaluation also provides valuable insights into the efficiency of processes, cost-effectiveness, and overall project success.

I completely agree with the position. Monitoring the performance of construction developments is something that one cannot help but think of as the core of management. All planning must be followed at all stages to see the gains and losses of the operation. This assessment must be made according to the construction company's culture parameters and based on financial relevance, safety risk and deadline. I believe that an assessment and measurement of KPIs per week in general would suffice. Sufficient time for corrections and route adjustments, keeping in mind the progress of the physical and financial evolution of the work/project.

I believe in a systematic assessment at key project milestones and completion of major phases. This allows for timely identification of challenges, adjustments to strategies, and continuous improvement. During my consruction days, we usually have quarterly reviews and post-project analyses which offer valuable insights. This is a dynamic approach to address some of our evolving project dynamics. Emphasis was placed on consistent evaluation to enhance adaptability, ensuring that the construction management process remains responsive and optimized for efficiency.

Evaluations I feel should be conducted yearly and be based on projects, team participation and how the clients viewed your performance on there project. I feel this is lacking in the industry for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. Your project is a reflection of you as well as your company, the way you interact with fellow team members ( PMs, office staff etc) also is crucial to the project and company and last the GC is your next project if he’s not happy with your performance than you possibly lost a customer.

We conduct evaluations at key project milestones, such as the completion of major construction phases, quarterly progress reviews, and upon project completion. This ensures that any deviations from the plan can be detected early, allowing for timely adjustments.

If you measure how good you are in managing construction, it has several aspects. First, define what "good" looks like. Then, it is worth using organizational assets to see what risks may impact your performance as the construction manager, probably run another risk assessment for yourself - if some time passes, and you see that you start missing your "good" construction manager indicators, you start changing management practices, then a question comes - why this could not have been done from the start, if proper Project Management Plans are developed? This calls for a proper project RA as early as possible. Third, if smth. still is wrong and changes made, it is to be tracked consistently, so not to reach the next gate still at a loss.

We are using performance metrics and KPIs tracking, stakeholder feedback surveys, on-site inspections, and retrospective analyses of completed tasks.

I completely agree with the position. There can be several evaluation methods and their accuracy is evaluated according to financial values. You won't count straws. The historical records of each construction company must be part of the lessons learned and the culture of the local market are also important parameters. It will not be necessary to reinvent the wheel, within the PMI three disciplines are very important for monitoring: Deadline, Costs, Scope. If we do this homework it will be good enough.
