When I started to come off as a more desirable option for my clients, the day rate was $40 a day. In the commercial world, we’re usually contracted by a business for about a month, so it came out to $1200 a month. I would set a price for add-ons, like contract mitigation, DTD, etc. I still offer a $40 day rate package, but now that I’ve been at it for four years, my average starting rate is around $200-$250 for commercials and various from project to project when I do films or theater. I don’t think a higher price translates to better talent. It’s best to sit down and get to know your CD and how they see people. Casting is one of those industries where you can do well with someone not well-known.

I'm a commercial, voice-over, and video game casting director. I work on films, TV, and theater, just not as much. The big difference is films/TV and theater tend to have longer turnaround times and a different set of rules, I.e., Chemistry reads, in-person auditions, and different union requirements. Those are taken into factor when I'm thinking about pay. I stick to a day rate model because it's user-friendly.

The great thing about the digital age is you can save a lot by hiring a remote casting director. I cast a lot of influencers, so remote is typically the best and most cost-efficient option. For film/TV and theater a hybrid model is something to discuss with your casting director. What that looks like is a remote option for prospecting, maybe even remote callbacks, then in-person chemistry reads or 2nd callbacks for the tip choices. Being flexible with in-person requirements can save time and money.
