How are ITIL and COBIT different?

Both ITIL & COBIT are prominent frameworks for IT management, they address distinct aspects of IT governance & service delivery. ITIL Focus on the practical aspects of delivering & managing IT services effectively. emphasize best practices across various service lifecycle stages, from planning, design to delivery, operation & continuous improvement. COBIT Focus on IT governance, ensuring alignment b/w business goals, IT strategy & risk management. Provide comprehensive framework for managing IT resources, control & ensuring compliance with regulations. They complement each other. COBIT helps define what needs to be done (governance goals), while ITIL provides a roadmap for how to achieve it (service delivery practices).

In ITIL 4, the traditional "service lifecycle" from ITIL v3 no longer exists. It has been wisely transformed into a much more robust model. The ITIL 4 version is based on a SVS (Service Value System), focusing not on processes but on practices and other components such as governance and guiding principles.

Service lifecycle is an approach to IT Service Management that places an emphasis on how important coordination and control is, across the various functions, processes, and systems that are necessary to manage the complete lifecycle of IT services. The approach of service lifecycle takes into consideration the strategy, design, transition, operation, and continual improvement of IT services.

From an Enterprise Architect's perspective: ITIL primarily focuses on incident and SLA management, aiming for high-quality responses to incidents and service requests, which in turn enhances the organization's technology landscape. On the other hand, COBIT emphasizes security, integrating with frameworks like SOX and security architecture, with the goal of creating a secure landscape resilient against both external and internal threats.

COBIT main objective is to provide controlling of enterprise IT services for business and with a set of rules for the right direction. It aligns business goals with IT goals by bringing IT value to a business, whereas ITIL’s main objective is to manage IT services and IT departments in ITSM. It provides continuous support and opportunity for an operational perfection of the services.

Governance and Control: COBIT provides a framework for governance and control over IT processes, focusing on aligning IT with business objectives, ensuring compliance, and managing risks effectively. Process Orientation: COBIT defines a set of processes for managing IT activities, including planning, building, running, and monitoring IT services, emphasizing the importance of process maturity and improvement. Framework Integration: COBIT integrates with other frameworks and standards, such as ITIL, ISO/IEC 27001, and NIST Cybersecurity Framework, providing a holistic approach to IT governance and aligning with industry best practices.

Unfortunately COBIT is still mistaken as a control framework. However, latest by the most recent two releases it became a mature, comprehensive and powerful governance framework: Aside being a comprehensive reference for governance of enterprise IT, by now it is a masterpiece in the sense of strategy aid and alignment tool. Having said that, I highly recommend to take a thorough look at the newly introduced Design Factors (and respective toolkit!) in order to shape your strategy, gain insights on dependencies & relationships and how to properly ensure business value creation by alignment ("governance"). It cant be said often enough, that this tool always gives you and answer to whatever IT-related challenge you or your reports are facing.

Simply spoken: COBIT doesn’t fly without ITIL. While COBIT describes a holistic view on IT governance, ITIL very specifically describes ITSM/IT processes. At all relevant processes, COBIT refers to ITIL as its specification. Above that it is often stated, that ITIL tells its reader ?how things need to be done“, while COBIT focuses on the ?what needs to be done“.

Why decide between ITIL or COBIT? ?Choose the best tool for the job“ ;) It is just important to be aware that there are frameworks etc. that provide support. In most cases you are not the first one with the problem your are facing. Get inspiration for the solution with such frameworks. Combine, adjust, challenge … to find what works for you! I would try to avoid just following one framework when it comes to processes.

COBIT is a framework designed to fill the gaps between business risks, management needs, and technical problems.?Conversely, ITIL is a framework to standardize the planning, selection, delivery, maintenance, and end-to-end lifecycle for business IT services.

It’s not about making a decision for or against one framework. Since they complement each other on different levels of detail, it’s a rather a question of how high level you want so stay/need to stay. No full implementation of COBIT functions without ITIL, since COBIT itself refers to ITIL for in-depth process implementation.

For both #ITIL and #COBIT i suggest to proceed with certification: - ISACA’s COBIT 5 for qualified enterprise IT governance professionals. - ITIL v4 for IT Service Management. Both have a foundation certification, plus other intermediate and advanced levels of certification. I personally pursued 3 ITIL certifications (foundation, Strategy, service transition), that were useful for : 1) learn standard terms and contents, to use same taxonomy and concepts everywhere in the world 2) add the certifications to my CV : they prove your training and knowledge 3) participate to tendere: very often private and public companies ask certifications to work! Your knowledge and value as a professional will be greatly improved.

I highly recommend for professionals in the realm of IT governance/IT strategy or even leadership positions in IT as well as business to get you head around COBIT 2019, respectively its Design Factors Toolkit. Understanding the basic concepts of business value creation, stakeholder needs and alignment of business and IT is very helpful. Understanding and having the Toolkit ?ready“ (in the sense of fully understanding it) at your hands is the most powerful tool for any challenges ahead in the above mentioned fields.

ITIL and COBIT are both best practices frameworks that both contribute to a comprehensive IT Governance approach. Driving value and achieving desired outcomes requires the IT organization to develop a culture that builds on ITIL and COBIT. Everyone in the organization must think, act, and execute using the same standard operating procedures and checklists. Quality thinking, fundamentally, has to be built into every planning, design, execution, analysis and optimization step. At no point does any process operator accept work without all they need to complete the job. Nor do process operators release work that is not meeting requirements. Implementing ITIL or COBIT will not yield results. Changing the culture and operating model will.
