How have digital libraries changed the way we learn online?

The ubiquitous mobile phone coupled with access to the internet have given unprecedented access to a wide range of information from digital libraries. The fact that you can consume information from the comfort of your own home using free digital libraries and open educational resources (OERs) means less restrictions due to distance and travel. What’s more, we now have more variety in the type of information available to us due to digital collaboration, archives, cloud computing, and the exponential growth of large language models (LLMs).

I do not believe that digital libraries have changed the ways that the typical - or median - person learns on-line. I also believe that they have generally not changed the ways in which most academics LEARN on-line. They have influenced how academics perform research. Digital libraries are more about the creation and storing of information/knowledge than about how individuals learn.

Some libraries are expanding their services to learners. Examples may including providing digital literacy training, offering NorthStar training, digital devices, and other resources that help the learner have a strong foundation for academic success. North Carolina is doing an amazing job of allocating funds to combat digital inequity through the Digital Navigator project. A federally funded project managed by the NCDIT.

It is this motivation that online education seeks to tap into. Online courses allow learners to choose when and where to learn. The traditional school schedule does not bind them. This flexibility makes it easier for learners to fit learning into their lives. Additionally, online courses often offer a more personalized approach to learning. This allows learners to focus on the topics they are most interested in. By catering to individual learners' needs, online education can be much more effective than traditional education. However, this is only possible if online courses are designed with the learner.

I like the idea of coupling digital libraries with moderated discussion forums. In general, learners enjoy interacting with other learners, online as much as in person.

Taking a perspective regarding students living in remote, or poorly resourced areas where 'brick-and-mortar' libraries and archives are generally unavailable, digital libraries play an immense role in developing information literacy and competency. The key enabler is data access, even via mobile phones and broadband data. However, digital libraries have to not only provide information and learning resources, but also help students develop their skills and competence in utilising the libraries. Digital libraries should have sign up training videos and data usage friendly training applications that assist students and users to build their confidence in using the library. This combined with data access can really enable their learning.

Well, digital libraries have drastically changed the learning process, and enhanced E-learning. I recall when we needed to have an article, and the university library was not a member of that journal and we needed to submit an application to the Librarian, who in turn would submit the paperwork to the management, then send a request, and the paper would come in the 'snail mail' so, it might take months to reach. Now, one can open the library from wherever and which country they are in. This really helped fasten the work, and the develop the way research is conducted. Well, it is a blessing to have such facility... however, I miss the good old days of quiet library and delving into the books and journals... but time changes...

One of biggest problems in giving exams online is that they have been dumbed down for the past 20 years by most professors and instructors teaching online to multiple choice and fill in the blank questions. They have basically eliminated short answer essay questions, for example <300 words because of plagiarism from so much digital information available from search engines. Recently AIs have even been caught taking the entire test for the student including answering short essay questions. We now have to integrate the Captcha or similar program to make sure it is a live human and not an AI taking the exam. Soon we will be using bio IDs like thumbprints or facial recognition on cell phones to proctor the exam. Maybe an AI proctor next.
