Scrum is a framework that defines roles, events, artifacts, and rules for agile software development. The main roles are the product owner, who represents the customer and defines the product vision and backlog; the Scrum master, who facilitates the Scrum process and removes impediments; and the development team, who self-organizes and delivers potentially shippable increments of software every sprint.

Scrum has increased the efficiency of overall team producitivity as all required stakeholders do a daily scrum call to remove impediments/hurdles.. We do Sprint planning, sprint demo, backlog refinement session so that all Team members will always be on same page!!

Scrum doesnt increase productivity directly or immediately. BUT, it helps you plan better, approach systematically and identify blockers earlier than before. When you plan better, you are already at a better position. When you approach to executing that plan systematically, you find blockers earlier and are able to find possible solutions earlier than before. Also applying analytics to every sprints output, you are able to check performance of the team and work on it more efficiently.

Work in progress is kept at a minimum to mitigate risk but also to minimise cognitive load on everyone in the team. In theory this should increase productivity. Transparency in everything you do should allow everyone to work more efficiently as well making sure everyone is working towards the same goal. Remember that slow is steady and steady is fast. We are aiming for a sustainable pace. If we achieve this, we can forecast better, people working on the team are more happy engaged and committed. And a derived effect of autonomy, mastery and purpose is without a doubt higher productivity.

Specs from large projects either through tenders or similiar processes usually don’t accommodate for an agile process or approach. So if insisting to use scrum will definitely require some work with clients and stakeholders to make them understand why an agile approach to building software is better and why that doesn’t mean that you can’t have specs or requirements that need to met or even deadlines. It’s just another mindset, but software built this way stands its test over time and that should be evident by now.

One of the biggest challenges that I have seen on a scrum team is managing scope and sprint priorities. A strong scrum master will facilitate sprint planning sessions with the correct resources to build out the sprint. Once the sprint os created the scrum master has to protect the sprint goals and disallow priority changes mid sprint. Scrum masters will feel pressure from client stakeholders to add, remove, or change sprint tasks based on business demands. When a scrum master allows these changes mid sprint the development team looses productivity changing gears and can result in development team losing trust in the process and becoming overly frustrated because they are not able to complete needed tasks

Corporate environment. It simply does not fit there. It almost never works in corporate environment. Do not use it, unless you know what you are doing. And unless you are willing to pay Scrum master and Product Owner and not only renaming your Project Managers to one or the other.

Adapting to Change: Embracing Scrum requires a cultural shift within an organization. Teams accustomed to traditional project management methodologies may struggle to adapt to Scrum's iterative and flexible approach. Time and Resource Constraints: Scrum relies on fixed timeframes (sprints) and resources, which can pose challenges in delivering all planned features within the designated time frame. Prioritizing and estimating tasks accurately is crucial to meet sprint goals.

Scrum is a simple framework to solve complex problems. The major challenge I keep facing is organizations saying "Scrum is not for us" when they did not even implemented the basis of Scrum, as stated in the less than 20 pages Scrum Guide. As Scrum does not prescribe how exactly you should do all things inside the framework, a lot of people feel it does not fulfill the "silver bullet" promise, which was never a promise made by Scrum or its creators. So, the major challenge is actually to have people fully respect and live the roles, participate in the social ceremonies and fill in the few artifacts proposed by Scrum.

One of the best ways to overcome the challenges of scrum is a continuous learning program about agile methodology covering the basics of the importance of the ceremonies as well as writing user stories. In addition doing refresher classes for all groups (product, engineering, architecture, UI, etc) periodically will help keep the teams focused. Another way to overcome challenges is to set goals between product and engineering for each sprint including stretch goals. Being in alignment on what value is to be delivered can help eliminate scope creep.

Training and Education: Providing training and resources to ensure that team members and stakeholders understand the principles and practices of Scrum. Support and Leadership: Strong leadership support and commitment to agile principles can help overcome resistance. Continuous Improvement: Regular retrospectives allow teams to reflect on their processes and make adjustments to improve performance. Clear Communication: Ensuring clear and transparent communication within the team and with stakeholders helps in managing expectations.

The main challenge is to step away from a system to build features and jump on the bandwagon of growing features. Meaning that we don't start of, or even try to, first design the full solution from the start. It's being discovered along the way instead. A mind-shift that isn't easy but rewarding.

I like to start with the Product Owner, having she really understanding and being able to communicate the Product Vision with the help of visual tools such as mind maps, empathy maps and the wonderful Product Vision Board proposed by Roman Pichler. From that, I would foster the interactions between the PO and the Dev Team, where the Product Vision is shared and Conceptual Integrity is achieved, knowing the product that will make the customer happy will be built in a phased approach, with the customer being present throughout all the process.

To overcome challenges in Scrum implementation, focus on comprehensive training and coaching for all team members, particularly the product owner and Scrum master. Engage stakeholders actively to build trust and alignment. Regular backlog refinement clarifies and prioritizes tasks. Team building fosters a collaborative culture, while continuous improvement drives process, product, and team enhancements.

Instead of productivity and TTM (time to market) one might consider moving to more outcome based trend metric evaluation. TTM becoming Time To Money instead for example.

Outcome Instead Output: Instead of just counting how many tasks a team completes, we can measure how those tasks actually help the business or users. This means looking at the results or outcomes of the work, like how much money the product makes or how satisfied customers are. This gives a better idea of the team's impact and what truly matters to the success of the project.

Productivity is a tricky word. A team can produce a lot and never make customers happy. So the metrics that really matters are the ones that measure how happy the customers are with the product increments they receive and I believe the Net Promoter Score is the best one: Would you recommend this product to a friend? Yes or No would suffice and this is a very easy metric to track. Of course the team will develop internal metrics such as velocity, quantity of Work in Progress and others who will help them to discover bottlenecks and where they can improve the quality of their deliveries within a healthy pace.

Measuring how productive Scrum is involves looking at different things like how fast the team works , charts that show how much work is left to do in a sprint , and the new features or updates that are finished at the end of each sprint. Team velocity gives an idea of how well the team works together and how much they can get done. Sprint burndown charts help track progress during the sprint to see if the team is meeting their goals. The quality and how often new features or updates are completed show how productive the team is and how much value they deliver to stakeholders.

Velocity is one thing, however we only aim for a stable velocity not necessarily higher. High performing teams might increase velocity when having worked well together for a long time, but it’s not a given. Another way to look at productivity is quality. By delivering higher quality, only achievable in a sustainable pace environments, you have less bugs, less downtime, better products and customer satisfaction, which allows the team to focus on what they are building right now instead of fixing things not built right the first time around. That is high productivity, at least the best you will get.

One thing that's helped my previous teams is looking into Commitment % - How much has the team delivered in comparison to what they have committed to get done during the sprint? Though it's hard to have a fully planned sprint, it will at least give management a rough idea on forecasting when a feature can get released to an end-user. I am a personal fan of using the average velocity and the average commitment % over the last 5 sprints to give an indication.

Well coming from a testing background the biggest benefit I see in a scrum environment is that all the stakeholders will be involved right from the scratch (eg : grooming a feature )which really helps the individual to get a good understanding of the feature which he or she will be working on in the sprint . On the other hand , I have also seen that documentation is not given enough importance in scrum as you see in other methodologies due to the sprint timelines they follow . If a team can really focus on good documentation and follow scrum , that can be the best team .
