How effective is your sales pitch?

I find putting yourself in the shoes of the customer and trying to see how your product and service will make their life less complicated and improve their experience is a good start. Then make sure you execute on what I like to call the 3 Ps Planning Preparation and Presentation and the last one applies not only to your pitch it also applies to how you present yourself on the day. Then on the day of the pitch, be on time, be alert, be respectful, ask plenty of questions and be prepared AND most importantly ask for the business.

Totally agree knowing your audience is key. A successful a pitch needs to be tailored. When doing a 1 - 1 B2B pitch this should be relatively easy with research and pre-pitch questioning. Open questions are great for finding out what you need. Kipling’s rhyme helps me… I keep six honest serving men, They taught me all I knew, Their names are What and Why and When, And How and Where and Who. What, Why, When, How, Where and Who. I’ve met lots of people who get invited to speak at networking events. A ‘general pitch.’ Research is just as important here. Who are the audience, why are they attending. Lots of research can still be done. The more research, planning, tailoring…the better your outcome. Have a fantastic day.

In my experience the more you pay attention and spend time on this first part of knowing your audience, the easier you'll find crafting a sales pitch that converts into the yes. When it comes to knowing your audience you want to be as specific as you can possibly be, understanding the difference between your broad audience vs those in the audience who are going to be ready and willing to buy right now is also key. The more you can speak to those specific people from a sales pitch angle the higher your conversions will be. Don't just stick to the surface things, sure you need to know why your audience would want to buy what you're selling, pay attention to understanding their buying personas and sales experiences they respond to best.

Understand their needs, preferences, and pain points. Craft a message that speaks directly to them, addressing their unique challenges and offering personalized solutions. Before crafting your sales pitch, research your prospect thoroughly. Identify their goals, challenges, and needs, as well as their preferences and decision-making process. Utilize sources like social media, websites, reviews, and referrals to gather insights and build rapport. The more you understand your audience, the better you can tailor your pitch to their specific interests and situation.

I remember yes ago sitting in weekly sales training sessions where we would discuss the Sandler Submarine… the theory is simple a submarine is designed to break the calm water and dive deep into uncharted waters and this is your job with your prospect. You need to break through the lovely calm facade and go digging for the pain points and then be able to offer real, sustainable, affordable solutions to meet their needs.

Totally agree. One thing I’ve found successful over the years is having 3 levels of objective. The top level awesome one, mid level and the I won’t leave without it objective. If I hit the top level, boom but if not I’ve got two other levels to aim for. Top level could be sale & 2 referrals, mid could be a second meeting, bottom could be no sale but 2 referrals. Helps me maximise getting a return from a meeting and also helps with all round positivity. I haven’t failed. Have fun.

I don't believe a one size fits all approach to objective when it comes to sales pitches is the right approach. What your objective will be is going to come down to who it is you're speaking with. This is where understanding your buyers persona also comes in. I'm an impulse buyer, I don't want to get into long drawn out sales experiences. I either want what you're selling there and then or I don't. Many of my own clients are exactly the same. So generally the objective is to just close the sale. But this isn't the case for everyone, some are more logical buyers in which case they may want to have a meeting or see a demo first. Know your buyers persona & craft the right experience. The experience will then define the objective.

Your sales pitch's objective should align with your prospect's stage in the buyer's journey and their readiness to buy. Determine if you aim to book a meeting, schedule a demo, get a referral, or close a sale. Ensure your objective is clear, realistic, and measurable. For instance, in the awareness stage, focus on educating prospects about their problem and your solution rather than pushing for an immediate purchase. Adjust your pitch accordingly.

Craft a captivating opening, outline the unique benefits of your offering, directly address customer needs, and end with a persuasive call to action. Structure your sales pitch using the AIDA model: Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. Begin by capturing attention with a compelling hook—perhaps a question, statistic, story, or compliment. Then, pique interest by showcasing how your solution aligns with their needs and goals. Foster desire by providing evidence of your solution's efficacy, like testimonials, case studies, or demonstrations. Finally, prompt action by requesting a commitment, whether it's scheduling a next step, trying a trial, or making a purchase.

Lots of people work on their content. Less people work on the delivery of their content. Using tone, volume, speed, pace, pause, body language, eye contact, movement & smile to your advantage you can get yourself into the top 5% of ‘pitchers.’

One of the most important factors when delivering your pitch is to remember not to overwhelm the other party and that silence is sometimes a good thing! When starting out I know it can be nerve wracking to hear silence but honestly it's not always a bad thing. A minute or two of silence is the other party processing the information you're sharing, they have to be able to process the information in order to say yes or no. People fall into the trap of overloading with information and not shutting up because they're afraid of the silence. When in reality the silence is going to help you get the conversion. Allow space for them to think and to process.

In delivering your sales pitch, ensure a compelling narrative that resonates with your audience's needs and challenges. Delivery is just as crucial as content in your sales pitch. Utilize effective communication skills like active listening, empathy, confidence, and enthusiasm to engage your prospect and foster trust. Use clear, concise language, avoiding jargon, and incorporating stories or analogies for clarity. Leverage verbal and non-verbal cues—tone, pace, volume, eye contact, gestures—to convey your message and emotions effectively. Visual aids such as slides, charts, or videos can enhance your pitch's impact and memorability.

Objection handling is by far one of the most challenging aspects of any sales pitch. Anticipating what might crop up will not only show them you have invested time understanding their brand and needs, but it will also show them that you are seeking out solutions to help them move forward. How you manage these objections may win or lose you the sale. Expect up-to three objections this is very normal.

When facing objections in sales, approach them as opportunities to further understand your prospect's concerns. Acknowledge their objections with empathy, demonstrating that you value their perspective. Take the time to address each objection systematically, providing relevant information and potential solutions. Use objection handling as a chance to build trust and showcase the value your product or service brings. Adapt your responses based on the specific objections raised, showing flexibility and a commitment to addressing your prospect's needs.

Anticipate objections and prepare responses that demonstrate the value of your solution and the cost of inaction. Listen attentively to objections, acknowledging the prospect's concerns, and ask clarifying questions. Provide evidence and examples to address objections effectively, turning them into opportunities to reinforce the value proposition.

A prepared pitch can be useful in ensuring key points are covered and key questions are asked in a prospecting conversation. One emergent issue with a prepared pitch is the detraction of focus from the words and views of the prospect. Follow on questions are questions which directly relate to statements made by the prospect. Further questioning these statements is key in uncovering challenges and potential benefits of your product / service to the customer. Ensure that when reviewing or using a prepared pitch, follow on questions are a focus to allow the conversation to centre around what's important to the prospect. Not the next prepared question in your pitch.
