How do you use the STAR method to structure your answer to "why should we hire you"?

By following this format, you can provide clear and concise examples of how you have demonstrated your skills and abilities in the past. When using the STAR methodology, be sure to focus on the skills that are most relevant to the job you are interviewing for. For example, if you are interviewing for a customer service role, you might highlight your communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills. How to avoid talking about the team When describing your actions, focus on what you did individually. Avoid using phrases like "we did" or "we accomplished.

You can use the STAR method when you are asked behavioral questions, which usually start with prompts like these: "Tell me about a time…, "Share an example of a time…, "Describe a time when…, "Have you ever…, and "Do you usually….

This method has been incredibly helpful to organize thought when preparing for an interview and for when answering behavioural type questions.

Often in every day situations, good leaders and team members default to use “we” when discussing accomplishments and wins. When interviewing, remember to get specific and concentrate on what YOU did, contributed and achieved. Get specific about your personal contributions and how you influenced the outcome. “My personal responsibility during this project was…” “I led the team to achieve…” “Through my leadership, we accomplished…”

In my experience, I have witnessed and been an employee of an acquisition/merger scenario many times. The fortune 500 companies include GE/Enron/Stewart Stevenson/Zond Wind/Quanta Energy Services. Every time, without fail, the acquisitions/mergers failed to include the importance of cultural differences, especially from 40000 employee 14 billion dollar revenue to 300 employees, 100 million revenue. I chose to move down the track of creating trust, sharing the strategic plan with all levels of the organization, and assimilating the common traits between the parent company and new acquired company

When providing examples of your experiences, think about times where you had to work with different kinds of people. Group projects, housing arrangements, traveling with peers, planning boards, clubs or sports teams, classes, etc. Were there differing ways you addressed individuals vs everyone at once? How did you work with others to stay on track and achieve your goal?

Sometimes during an interview it becomes difficult to assess the candidates fitment, not just from a technical standpoint but also from the attitudinal and behavioural perspective. The STAR framework becomes an enabler here for both the interviewer and the one being interviewed, as the structure provides the platform to clearly articulate and convey what's in the mind.

Also, it's really important when using this methodology to still remain authentic and talk about your personal experience use your storytelling expertise.

One thing that I've always found helpful is to research beforehand and note down relevant examples that I can quantify quite well. Once you have your points, focus on those experiences from your past that align with the skills and qualities the current employer (the one that's interviewing you) is seeking. Choose situations that demonstrate quite well how you handle different challenges, promote quality teamwork, lead soundly, solve problems on the go, and adapt.

It's really important to use the star methodology to highlight your recent achievements and work that you have done that will highlight your skills for the job you are applying for. * don't be afraid to take notes, and also if you need a minute to think about question, take a breath interviews can be hard.

Oftentimes, in the rush to exemplify and quantify, you might sound a bit repetitive. This is essentially not bad, just that it helps to add a bit of variety to your projects. While it's always a sound choice to go for experiences from when you were at the top of your field, say you've won a spot award or had been applauded by a client for your results, don't limit yourself to these. Bring out situations where your plan or strategy did not quite deliver what you intended. But you LEARNED a lot. Businesses are all about learning and unlearning on the go. If you are able to highlight your learnings, you will be given a fair shot.
