How do you use Sentry or Bugsnag to fix front-end errors?

Error tracking services capture errors not just in your browser but what's more important in your customers browsers, so that you and your team are notified about errors your customers are encountering, that you could be not aware of without the use of these srvices. These errors tracking services help capture detailed information about client side errors, including data such as the user's browser name and version, stack trace, .etc. that helps debugging these errors and fixing them.

In a scenario where a product serves a vast user base with varying browser types, versions, and device specifications. Error reporting tools like Sentry or Bugsnag for the frontend help us to captures, reports errors, exceptions, and crashes in real-time, providing detailed information such as stack traces, request data, and environment. Ultimately, this enables us to serve a superior experience to a diverse range of customers by effectively logging and addressing client-side errors.

I am really Thankful to Sentry and Bugsnag, for really helping a FE developer to find out the issue beforehand. Most of the issue we never see as developer in our test environments and we see them in production, when it comes in real use. These tool really help us to know the issue and where it is happening and how many users are impacted because of this. It only not help us with console error finding. It also help us to measure the performance of application a different set of devices(as it measures on production environment. )

Ever since we've implemented sentry in our frontend apps not only have the runtime errors on browser console gone down but we've also been able to track down some production issues by following user's breadcrumbs. Sentry can also capture custom exceptions which helps us test out experiments

I really like the feature where you can upload the source maps to enable readable stack traces for your console errors. It helps us to understand which code line is causing the issue. rather than checking in minified JS file(where you can't understand the problem line of your code)

To enhance your application's performance and minimize initial loading delays, consider loading an error tracking SDK dynamically, triggered by the occurrence of the first error. This strategy, commonly known as "lazy loading" or "on-demand loading" of error tracking SDKs, ensures that the error tracking functionality is introduced into the application only when necessary.

Make sure for variable data, you use the "extra" parameter. This is standard in error reporting libraries. If you don't use it, and instead you interpolate something that changes into the error message, your error log will blow up with many different errors that are actually the same

Utilize features like source maps for clearer stack traces, and integrate error reporting with your version control system for streamlined issue tracking. Additionally, consider implementing automated regression tests to catch issues early and use performance monitoring to identify potential problem areas before they affect users. These practices ensure you not only resolve current issues but also prevent future ones, maintaining a smooth user experience.

The errors will normally have a stack trace associated so you can resolve them by fixing the bug in that area of the code. If the stack trace is unreadable, you may need to enable source maps for it to show up. Sometimes the errors can also come from chrome extensions that your users have installed, but Sentry is doing a better job now of filtering those out

In my experience, what you get is about the same. However, sentry's SDK has a larger bundle size when you pull it in compared to Bugsnag. So Bugsnag can be a better option if you want to add as little javascript as possible to your application

Try to limit usage of these tools to unexpected errors. Use other tools for logging and metrics (like Datadog SDK) since you generally want to keep "Inbox 0" for your error reporting system

When choosing between Sentry and Bugsnag, consider factors like cost, scalability, ease of integration, and the specific features each tool offers. Evaluate the community support, documentation, and ongoing development of the tools to ensure long-term compatibility with your project.
