1 What is a layer mask?

A layer mask is a grayscale image that controls the visibility of a layer. Each pixel on the mask corresponds to a pixel on the layer. The darker the pixel on the mask, the more transparent the pixel on the layer. The lighter the pixel on the mask, the more opaque the pixel on the layer. A black mask hides the entire layer, a white mask reveals the entire layer, and a gray mask partially hides or reveals the layer. You can add a layer mask to any layer by clicking on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel.
