An emerging trend is to see journals specify the percentage of notes, footnotes or endnotes, to text ratio. Most of them are leaning towards no more than 10 percent of the text consisting of notations. This is to help cut down on the trend of writing additional words and commentary in the notations which are not generally counted in the overall word count.
