How do you use color contrast to enhance wireframe readability?

The way the contrast appears can vary greatly from screen to screen. Users have vastly different preferences when it comes to how bright they like their screen to be. For this reason, it is important to keep to the contrast ratio suggestions published in the WCAG guidelines to ensure your users have the best possible experience.

Wireframe colors? Not just eye candy! Think spices - use right or it's recipe for disaster (readability, duh). 1. Big stuff, bold colors: Buttons, titles? Highlight them like neon signs. Less important? Dimmer lights, lower contrast. 2. Inclusive feast: Use tools like WebAIM to ensure everyone sees your colors, not just vision ninjas. 3. Color psychology, but chill: Green good, red bad? Sure, but labels & icons are your best buds. Explain the spice, don't rely just on color. 4. Spice it up, or chill: Big screens? Crank the contrast. Internal chats? Relax. 5. Feedback is the secret sauce: Get people to "taste" your wireframe. See if the contrast hits the spot. Adjust as needed.

Wireframes are the most basic form of an Interface. If a user can't navigate a wireframe correctly, they likely won't be successful navigating it as a high fidelity product. Contrast is used to both communicate importance and hierarchy. When used properly, the user can easily make sense of what data to focus on and how to navigate in the performance of a desired task.

There are also many plugins that make checking for contrast ratios easier right inside your designs. They are available for popular design tools like Figma, Sketch, etc.

Wireframes have a certain purpose to a go through the actual flow of the application/site, here design is not the main priority but how the flow of the site/app is apt keeping in mind the user experience and journey. Ideally it can go in black, white, gray. If you wish to add that visual appeal, you can go with the brand colours or pick a color of your choice.

Avoid the use of color as much as possible when designing wireframes. They distract from the goal and purpose of your wireframes.

This can be tricky. For most products, they are supported by a brand. It is usually the preference of product professionals for the application to match the company branding. It has been my experience that Marketing, or those in charge of branding, does not consider contrast standards when creating branding palettes. This can make it very difficult to translate to an accessible environment. Start by asking the marketing team to give you an accessible palette that goes along with the brand. If they can't give it to you, sometimes you have to pick accessible colors that will be a close representation of your brand but not exact.
