How do you troubleshoot data analysis problems in an interview?

In my experience, the key to understanding the problem is to deploy interrogatives 'why' and 'what'. In some cases the 'why' will lead you to better understand of the problem but in other cases the 'what' suffices. Again, the adage ' there is safety in the multitude of council' can be applied. Thus, always ask for support to understand the problem if you are not sure. The problem is partly solved if its well defined and understood. The test of understanding of the problem is the ability to explain to different stakeholders at their level of understanding.

Consulting like a pro: My 5-step approach 1. Deep dive: I ask tons of questions to grasp the situation fully. Facts first! 2. Map it out: While asking, I envision the data needed. Think of it as a roadmap! I map out what information goes where and how it connects. 3. Data check: With a clear understanding of the problem, I confirm I have the right data. Here, I also start picturing the final report. 4. Analyze and solve: Confident in the data, I delve into analysis. I continuously refine my approach to ensure an effective solution. 5. Story time: I wrap up by telling the analysis story. I guide the listener through my journey, explaining everything clearly and simply.

Spend 90% of the time understanding the problem and 10% solving it. Sounds crazy? Well, of you understand the problem fully then the Fix will be simple

First, we need to understand the source of information, ensuring the source is appropriate for needs. Then, ensure data is being parsed to give a valid picture, as data can be construed in many ways. Once we've done this, we can narrow the question to target our search to a single goal, making certain we pull away ambiguity.

Not just the problem, but also the impact of the problem. or the ‘so what?’ . We must also analysis the related problems. For example if the problem is lack of female representation in leadership, is this connected to the problem of not being able to attract female talent to key positions in the organization?

I think that by blending curiosity with a structured explanation, you can present your results as a product of thoughtful exploration and analysis. Narrate the journey of your analysis, highlighting key points that (maybe) diverge from the expected, and explain the insights gained and possible solutions. Good luck!

Do not disregard the edge cases, however small. Based on your visual granularity, you may miss some of the edge cases. The interesting insights are not just in aggregates of similarities, but how the data is dissimilar.
