The best bet is to assume that they do not know what you are teaching them. This prevents confusion later on. Let them tell you what they know when the times comes. In a customer service environment this helps in making the interaction more natural and comfortable. After walking through the first steps, you will usually be able to discern their skill level. At which point you can begin to tailor the lesson for their needs.

The above-mentioned are all great pointers to keep in mind. But you must also remember, one size does not always fit all. Evaluate the level of your trainee's or customer's digital literacy first. Ask them questions on things they know, or they are aware of. There may be a few who may feel sensitive that you assume they may not know the simplest of things, like switching on a device for example. We are in a modern age afterall. Demonstrate how they would be using the devices. After making sure they can perform the task, ask if there are any questions or input they may have on the task at hand. They may know some things that may be helpful too.

4 Provide practice and support

Keeping up to date is paramount if you want to be able to provide solid education in any field. Best practices can change. And when it comes to Information Security when using smart devices nothing is more important than keeping up to date with how to protect yourself online.

The first thing that comes to mind is resistance to change. Often that comes from a more common term in ones life: shame, fear of being interpreted as ridiculous by peers. That is why the first step into aiding someone to adopt smart devices should be getting them familiar with their purpose and perks in a familiar manner: My way will always include gaming or access to video streaming platforms since they get users easily entertained. Being mesmerized by the advantages will make the new user crave for more and the anxiety to try something new will be step by step replaced by the excitement of trying something new (adults have weird fears, I know). Once you have the will /atention of the eager pupils, just expose the rascals to new devices.

In my view, the hardest to train how to use smart devices are usually the senior generation. Patience is the key to success here. Most of them slowly adapt to new technologies. Specially once you show them that it "makes life easy" they tend to learn faster.
