1 What is SIP?

2 How does SIP work?

SIP works by using four basic elements: user agents, proxies, registrars, and location servers. A user agent is any device or application that can initiate or receive a SIP session, such as a phone, a computer, or a mobile app. A proxy is a server that acts as an intermediary between user agents, forwarding and routing SIP messages according to certain rules. A registrar is a server that records the location and availability of user agents, and updates the location server accordingly. A location server is a database that stores the information provided by the registrars, and helps the proxies to locate the user agents.

SIP is widely used in the telecom industry. At a very high level, SIP creates a session between two endpoints. In doing so, it negotiates multimedia capabilities of the endpoints. If both endpoints, agree on the capabilities a multimedia session is created.

SIP offers many benefits for both users and service providers, such as flexibility, scalability, cost-effectiveness, security, and adaptability. It is a versatile protocol that enables different types of devices and applications to communicate and interoperate. It also reduces the need for expensive hardware and infrastructure, supports encryption and authentication mechanisms to protect the privacy and integrity of the sessions, and supports various features like call transfer, call hold, call waiting, call forwarding, and conferencing.

Sip protocol is widely used in telecom world. IMS core basically use SIp as signalling protocol to connect two end points called user agents . And IMS is used in 4G and 5G core for signalling.

SIP provides a lot of flexibility and security over any other technology at the moment in the telecom industry. 1. Easy of set up: Majority of the modern VoIP providers such as Twilio, Bandwidth, etc take full advantage of SIP. To create a SIP trunk to on premise or CCaaS/UCaaS platform takes a few minutes. 2. Security: With the usage of TLS/SRTP, there is no need for hardware provided security. 3. Cost Savings: Over the older gen technology, there is significant amount of savings since there is really no need for a physical circuit to provide voice communications. SIP communications can be simply done over the internet or a private IP connection.

Learn about: * Session Description Protocol * Secure Real-Time protocol * Transport Layer Security SDP describes who as talking to whom and how (phone or video call). Since its introduction in late 1990s (RFC2543), SIP has grown and adopted at a very respectable rate. The current RFC3261 should be starting point for anyone who wants to learn about SIP. There is an excellent book by one of the co-authors of SIP RFC3261, Alan Johnston. "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol," has helped me quite a bit. There has been a few versions of the book since its initiation, so ensure to pick up the latest one. If you want to play around with SIP, there is an excellent tool, SIPp, that can act as a server and a client. This is an open source tool. It is one of the easier tool to use and learn SIP. If you're looking to learn more about SIP, you can find plenty of resources online. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) develops and maintains SIP specifications and standards, and you can find official SIP documents and related protocols on their website. Additionally, the SIP Forum is a non-profit industry association that promotes the adoption and interoperability of SIP, with news, events, publications, and best practices available on their website.
