How do you test if your subtext and symbolism are clear and consistent throughout your story?

I use subtext most of the time to convey a message that I want a particular circle of readers to grasp, and I am always happy when the target people react to the story. I use images, and colors more often to show my feelings toward the actual story so that my readers can be in a similar state of mind when they are reading my story. Both are helpful, always always helpful.

The most effective and powerful subtext and symbolism is deeply personal to the creator to the point it becomes universal, thus able to be re-interpreted and recontextualized for different readers and audiences. I am proudest of my work that readers uncover something that was not initially intended by me, but still holds deep truth in the text. One of those moments where I recognize that I had not thought of that but can't deny it applies.

Actually, using a symbol in contradictory ways challenges the reader, and forces them to actively engage with the text. It obviously must be purposeful, but a 'rose' being used for multiple symbols can signify how the world is not straightforward, and things that are beautiful and good can also be foreboding and dangerous.

The truth is that a one-tone story is usually boring, which makes the writer predictable. Once a writer becomes predictable, it is only a matter of time before their audience loses interest and moves on to a better writer. Therefore, while consistency is important, I am not reluctant to using creativity, plot twists, and other techniques when producing content. Sometimes, readers need to make an effort to identify why the same symbol is used in different ways. Instead of being confused, they will be excited and feel they can keep up with the writer's creativity. Once readers are engaged in this way, they are more likely to become lifelong, loyal fans.

Oh yes, my readers are my major inspiration when it comes to delivering content. To be valuable to them, I need to consider their thoughts and perspectives, and therefore their feedback is paramount. However, I cannot depend solely on feedback because intuitively, I know what is good. The first person I should please is myself. If I cannot read what I have written, smile, and feel proud of it, then it is not worth sharing with anyone else. Yes, taking feedback is important, but I should filter and apply it where and when necessary. Independent thinking is the foundation of successful writing, and it is essential to maintain my own voice and vision while considering feedback. Thank you.

One thing I’ve found useful is being brutally honest hope. This means: taking the time to reflect on what kind of story you want to tell and what are the subtexts and overall tone of voice you need to achieve that kind of storytelling. You know deep down what your essential story pillars are and compartmentalization helps for clearer messages, avoids confusion.
