1 Why teach urban planning?

Urban planning has a significant impact on all those who live, work, or visit a city or region. It can affect the quality of life, environment, economy, and culture of a place. It can also influence the decisions and actions of individuals, communities, and institutions. Thus, teaching urban planning to the public can be highly beneficial. It can raise awareness and interest in urban issues and solutions while engaging and empowering citizens to participate in planning processes and outcomes. Additionally, it can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, foster collaboration among diverse groups and perspectives, as well as inspire creativity and innovation for urban transformation.

Urban planning is the process whereby we can make decisions about the future of our cities. Empowering students to plan for our urban futures requires us to teach them how infrastructures, institutions and individuals interact over time and space. The interaction between these diverse systems and actors is what make cities so innovative, exciting and dynamic. It is this exercise in complexity, and seeing the patterns of past development, which allow us to use urban planning to write the future.

I teach urban planning through my educational platform for environmental psychology and with the articles I'm writing about social issues evoked by urban planning in the local context. The main reason is raising awareness in the society by actively engaging people in the urban planning processes that continuously affect their life quality and reshapes the urban tissues . Also I like to provoke cooperation between different groups including decision makers, institutions and citizens in optimizing the environment by preserving the cultural identity and transforming the societies by making them more congruent.

2 Who are the learners?

The public is a diverse and dynamic group, so before teaching urban planning, it is important to identify who the learners are, what they want to learn, and how they prefer to learn. Age, background, context, and goals are all factors to consider. For example, children, youth, adults, and seniors may have different cognitive, emotional, and social needs when learning; people from different cultural backgrounds may have different perspectives; people from different geographic contexts may have different urban challenges; and people may have different reasons for learning about urban planning. All of these factors should be taken into account when teaching urban planning.

Strategic & Integrated Urban Planning is so important. Decisions made today have flow on effects far into the future - both good and bad. Getting the balance right between economic development imperatives with social and placemaking needs is critical, but so is working with the natural environment rather than against it. Quality outcomes in urban design mean all of these elements need to be properly integrated into the planning process, and not just included as general principles or motherhood statements. Members of the community get a say in this work too - its not just up to planning authorities and developers- so the better informed and educated everyone is, the better the outcomes for the whole community.

Depending on the audience and goal, you may want to focus more on certain aspects or provide a general overview. Possible contents to teach include urban history and geography, urban systems and structures, urban design and aesthetics, urban policy and governance, and urban futures and scenarios.
